PEP, Jr.

The newest addition to the SIMBC fleet, “PEP, Jr.” definitely shows its Chesapeake heritage.  The double ended hull, raked unstayed mast, leg o’ mutton spritsail, and club footed balanced jib were once common to skiffs and log canoes on the Bay.  Many years ago, boatwright George Surgent adapted plans originally drawn by Howard Chappelle and built a replica of a 19th century crab skiff for the Calvert Marine Museum.  He named it ”PEP” in honor of LeRoy "Pepper" Langley, a founding member of the Calvert Marine Museum and SIMBC.  The original is currently on display at the Museum.  George has taken his original plan and adapted it as an r/c model.  It is 32” long, and designed to be an entry level project for beginner model builders.  The boat can literally be build in a day…add a day, or two for the paint to dry, and you’ve got a boat on the water.  And that bowsprit! Talk about salty!
