Workshop on presentation skills
We are pleased to provide the following two-part workshop, which is intended for PhD students who wish to hone their presentation skills in light of the upcoming conference season (including the SICSA PhD conference!). Details are as follows:
Presenter: Phil Wadler, University of Edinburgh
Date: Monday 19th April 11.30-2.30pm; lunch will be provided
Location: Room G.03, Informatics Forum, University of Edinburgh
The first session addresses written presentation. Even good academic authors rarely reach the standard of literary professionals. This workshop covers topics ranging from details of punctuation to subtleties of style, with examples highlighting the good, the bad, and the ugly of the written word. More than a structured checklist of writing cliches, this workshop is geared to tell you what your readers and reviewers wish you already knew.
After lunch, the second session addresses oral presentation. An academic talk is not about communicating all the details of your work; it should entertain, convey the key intuitions, and leave your audience with a burning desire to read your paper. This workshop covers topics ranging from how to breath to a life-critical example of presenting data. The final segment of this session will focus on chairing a conference.
Places are limited and so you must register to attend this workshop. To register please email katie.urquhart@ed.ac.uk before the end of Wednesday 14th April.
Workshop on reviewing papers
Presenters: Alan Bundy, University of Edinburgh and Ian Gent, University of St Andrews
This workshop is primarily intended for students who are planning to act as reviewers for papers submitted to the SICSA PhD conference. It is also open to other students and early careers research staff who may be interested in this topic.
The workshop will include hands-on review practice working with a previously published academic paper. The paper will be circulated to each participant in advance of the meeting, and there will not be time to read it on the day so a little preliminary homework is essential.
Date: Monday 15th March from 10am - 12.30pm
Location: Room 4.31, Informatics Forum, University of Edinburgh
Registration: You must register to attend. Please email chris.jowett@ed.ac.uk to register.
Details will soon be posted regarding future workshops on presenting at a conference and conference chairing. Please check back soon.
