Storm water is a significant source of water pollution for the Gatineau River. Fortunately it's one of the threats property owners can have the greatest positive impact on by using some ecological landscaping principles related to stopping runoff before it starts by promoting infiltration into the ground, enhancing evaporation or simply use it for plant growth.

Ecological landscaping starts by minimizing impact on the 50' of shoreline closest to the river and minimizing the amount of storm water flowing into this zone by:

• using permeable pave­ment or porous pavers instead of asphalt or concrete for driveways

• rain barrels

• rain gardens

• swales

• iInfiltration trenches and soakaways

• downspout redirection
