"Woman, 79, Killed on Street By Auto"

Charge of Negligent Homicide Brought Against Driver of Car

A 79-year old Martinsburg woman became the city's third traffic fatality of the year Sunday afternoon when she was struck down by a car in front of First E.U.B. Church in the 500 block of North Queen street where she had been attending a service.

City Police said Mrs. Ada Virginia Poisal, 550 North Queen street, had taken about one step from the curb into the street when she was hit by a northbound car driven by Lawrence G. Ruble, 38, of 113 Dailey street.

Officers said the impact knocked the woman about 10 feet. She was taken to City Hospital minutes after the 1:35 p.m. mishap by Ryneal Ambulance and died there about an hour later.

Ruble has been charged with driving on an expired license and negligent homicide and will be taken before Justice of the Peace C.P. Dingler today. He had been held in the City Jail.

He had originally been charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants but the charge was changed to negligent homicide following the woman's death.

A native of the city, born on July 2, 1883, Mrs. Poisal was a daughter of the late Dennis and Susan Moberly Harrington.

She spent most of her life here and was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Daughters of Rebekah.

Her husband, John E. Poisal, died on Jan. 1, 1948.

Surviving are a son, William E. Harrington, Bristol, Va.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Rosemont, Kogelschatz and Coffman Funeral Home, with the Rev. David C. Crawford, of First Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Charles B. Weber, of First E.U.B. Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

Marriage, Carrie L. Herrington and Algernon Gano, 1904

Marriages: Gano-Herrington

A very interesting event was the wedding of Miss Carrie L. Herrington, daughter, or Mr. and Mrs. John S. Herrington, and Mr. Algernon Gano, which occurred at the home of the bride's parents on North High street Wednesday night at 8 o'clock. A number of friends assembled to witness the ceremony and extend their congratulations and best wishes.

The maid of honor was Miss Mamie Fries, while little Miss Herrington, sister of the bride, was the ring bearer. Mr. Wm. Rice was the best man. Miss Slaughter presided at the organ and played the wedding march as the bridal party assembled in the room. They were met by Rev. C.D. Harris who read the service which united the young couple in his usual happy and impressive manner.

The bride was gowned in White and carried a bouquet of bride roses. The maid of honor and the ring bearer were also gowned in White and carried flowers.

After the ceremony a reception was held, at which refreshments were served. The young couple will reside in the house formerly occupied by the parents of the bride, as they have removed to Baltimore.

For long years a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church; a diligent, industrious and conscientious man; faithful in his duties. The Master whom he served has at last come and called him home to rest. His sickness was very tedious and extremely trying, yet his faith did not fail. He was patient and submissive. He greatly longed to be delivered, and as the day drew near his spirits become more buoyant and he enjoyed singing. "Happy Day," "Nearer My God to Thee," and "Rock of Ages," were hymns which gave him peculiar comfort. "Blessed is the man who puteth his trust in Thee." -- W.
