(dated March 2023)
SFVNA used to consider every adult who lived in SFV a member. Last year, in 2022, the ABQ City Council changed the law that approves or recognizes a neighborhood association. Now, residents must inform us in writing that they wish to be considered members.
Why should you take the time to do that? Here's why:
SFVNA is a "recognized" neighborhood association. By law, recognized neighborhood associations must be informed of any proposed developments, zoning changes, or requests for exemptions from zoning that may affect them, whether these are within the neighborhood or in the surrounding area. This means that we can help members to protect their property values by representing their interests to government officials and administrative departments. SFVNA is currently opposing an undesirable development on the mesa top. Recognized NAs also have automatic appeal standing, which gives them the right and opportunity to challenge approved projects.
Being represented by a NA gives members a louder, unified voice that is more effective than input on an individual level. For example, SFVNA worked with other NAs and successfully prevented the construction of a Walmart, on land which instead became the site of our local Sprouts. We also worked with our former city councilor to make the Taylor Ranch Library community room a reality.
As a recognized NA, SFVNA is eligible to apply for certain kinds of grant funding. This is how the two small parks in SFV were created out of what were empty lots on Bogart - one at Foxford and one at Azuelo. Grants from the County funded supplies and resident volunteers provided labor. This year we were awarded funds to enhance our annual SFV celebration and Holiday Lights contest, two family-oriented events that help residents to have fun while they get to know each other.
Seven members who are elected by the membership serve on the SFVNA Board. But, every member's ideas are needed and every contribution is appreciated. Ensure that the Board is aware of your ideas and concerns; play a part in keeping our neighborhood beautiful and safe. Join SFVNA.
Membership is free.
