About Día San Francisco

San Francisco’s Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros: A Celebration of Children & Books is rooted in a longtime Latin American tradition of celebrating children. San Francisco’s first Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros was held in 1999 and each year since then, organizers continue to volunteer their time and resources to achieve the goal of promoting literacy and unifying families of all cultures, through a community-based, child-centered event.

Each year our event grows in numbers of attendance and collaboration. To date, this celebration has reached thousands of children and their families, who’ve enjoyed world dance, music, theater, storytelling and most importantly the opportunity to engage in hands-on exploration and learning. Families can get a library card and check-out books from the San Francisco Public Library Bookmobile, choose from a variety of literacy-related arts and crafts, and take home free multilingual books.

Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros partners with a variety of local arts and education organizations to host fun literacy based activities that families can easily replicate (all sponsors are encouraged to plan activities using recycled materials found in most homes). In addition local performance groups, including professional storytellers are invited to perform.  The groups include nationally known children’s performers and also young people who have worked hard to learn the music and dance of different cultures. Thankfully, we continue to grow our circle of friends who donate time and knowledge throughout the year-long planning process and Celebration day.

This annual celebration has distributed over 20,000 multilingual books.
