October's Herb of the Month : ST JOHN’S WORT - Hypericum perforatum

St John’s wort is named after St John because it blooms on his birthday in mid-June. Wort means herb and yousee the word attached to other herbs like motherwort or mugwort. St John’s wort was thought to be a special plant because its flowers resemble the sun. The flowers have five petals and long stamens that look like rays of the sun. The flowers are heliotropic meaning they follow the sun from east to west as it crosses the sky. St John’s wort can be used to support natural wellbeing, the pretty flowers having accumulated the sunny nature of summer are perfect to use in the longer, darker winter months.

HABITAT

St John’s wort is native to temperate parts of Europe and Asia and has spread worldwide. It prefers sandy soil and often occurs in pastures and disturbed fields.

Herb of the month Chamomile A4 download.pdf

A member of the daisy family, calendula (also known as marigold) is a fast growing annual or biennial plant with aromatic leaves and heads of vivid orange daisylike flowers, borne in long succession in the summer and autumn until the first hard frosts.

When you pick calendula or rub the leaves, they smell very aromatic and pungent; they exude resins that make your fingers sticky when you pick them. The whole flowers or petals are used. The petals are edible and may be used in salads.

The flowers are used as herbal infusions and are crafted into tinctures or macerated oils.

HABITAT

Calendula originated in the Mediterranean region. It grows in light, free-draining soil in full sun or partial shade. Seed can be sown in spring or autumn. DID YOU KNOW? Neal's Yard grow fields of golden calendula at their eco factory in Dorset.

In the summer months, people working at the eco factory will often go out for a few hours on hot, sunny days to help harvest the flowers. These then get made into herbal tinctures for use in our products or as a herbal supplement.

FAVOURITE WAYS TO USE

Calendula is a favourite herb to use in skincare products, due to its soothing effect. The tincture or infusion is incorporated into herbal creams or salves. Marigold macerated oil is great for soothing sensitive skin.

You’ll find calendula in Calendula Cleanser.

This gentle and mild cleansing cream washes away make-up and everyday impurities to leave your face feeling fresh and clean.

Ideal for dry and sensitive skin types, the blend of organic calendula and jojoba is enriched with natural skin-conditioning botanical oils to soften and soothe.
