Series in CIP

When a series title appears on a resource only in the CIP (Cataloging-in-Publication), do not trace it or make a series authority record. Also, do not transcribe numbering of series from CIP.

See RDA LC-PCC PS 2.12.1.2: Series Statement Present Only in Cataloging Data

LC practice/PCC practice: If the series statement appears only in pre-publication cataloging data (foreign or domestic) in the item, do not transcribe this information as a series statement.

The rationale for these instructions is that “Since CIP data represents the publisher’s intention at a point prior to publication, the absence of the series from the published manifestation implies a change in that intention. By analogy, the absence of numbering from the published resource (outside the CIP data) can be interpreted as the publisher’s intention not to number the parts of the series” (Program for Cooperative Cataloging Standing Committee on Training Series Policy Task Force Interim Report, Jan. 17, 2014, page 21 http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/documents/PCCSCTSeriesPolicyListRecommendations20140117-SCSMay29.docx)

Optionally, a cataloger may add series information appearing only in the CIP as a quoted note.
