CIP Form of Personal Names

Since CIP (Cataloging-in-Publication) data represents the publisher’s intention at a point prior to publication, CIP information is usually ignored in cataloging. However, it can be very useful in authority work for personal names. RDA (9.2.2.2: Sources of Information) allows the cataloger to use “other sources (including reference sources)” when determining the preferred name for a person and when additional information is needed to break the conflict with another name.

Example:

Title page:

Олег Блохин
биографический очерк

Алексей Кузнецов

Москва
"Книжный клуб"
2000

CIP information on title page verso:

Кузнецов А. А. Олег Блохин : биографический очерк - Москва : "Книжный клуб", 2000.
5936070042

An authority record for a different Kuznet︠s︡ov, Alekseĭ already exists in the National Authority File. The initial “A” for a patronymic that appears in the CIP block here can be used in the authorized access point to differentiate between the two authors.

Example (in MARC format):

100 1 Kuznet︠s︡ov, Alekseĭ ǂq (Alekseĭ A.)

400 1 Кузнецов, Алексей ǂq (Алексей А.)

400 1 Kuznet︠s︡ov, A. A. ǂq (Alekseĭ A.)

670 Oleg Blokhin, 2000: ǂb title page (Алексей Кузнецов = Alekseĭ Kuznet︠s︡ov) CIP (А.А. Кузнецов = A.A. Kuznet︠s︡ov)
