I like this thread. I found that some mangoes grow true to type. I can't
spell but they call them pollyembroatic or something like that. they way I
tell is that the mango seed that put out more than one tree from the seed
usually come true to mom. I live in Santa Barbara and I had lots of grafted
mango trees that were kill back below the graft from a freeze we had in the
90s so now I really prize seedlings because there is no dying below the
graft and they can come back true. I know folks that only eat from seedling
trees and think grafting is not so good. either the scion grows faster than
the graft or vice a verse . I think for money people in stores all buy Hass
or name brands. so for money I grow good tasting grafted trees but I also
love seedlings . I also have a white peach that has great seedlings . I
have a orange grapefruit that is so sweet and comes true to seed so far.
remember all trees came from seedlings . I would like to see the list of
true parent seed plants. nothing beats a true seedling with tap root and
natural growth. all one and the same plant .

I noticed that the announcement of this tomato from Nichols said that the flavor has been improved from the earlier ones. It does sound like a very healthy tomato with its high amount of anthocyanins.
Nichols nursery said--"There has been a buzz about this breeding program for some years because the deep purple colored skins and surrounding tissue are extremely high in anthocyanin. The flavor is quite pleasing, much more so than early selections several years ago."

Scope and Purpose:
We are a public access seed bank - not a commercial seed company. You will find that our presentation of information and
how you access our seedbank is a bit different from ordering seeds from the usual on-line commercial enterprise.
Our purpose is the preservation of botanical diversity, and the preservation of vanishing knowledge of the uses of
plants - called "ethnobotany" or "ethnobotanical knowledge". To this end, we distribute rare seeds from every continent;
native plants from around the world, including flowers, vines, trees, cacti, culinary herbs, heirloom vegetables,
ornamentals, hardy perennials, medicinal plants, and tropicals. We also distribute Gibberellic Acid-3, complete GA-3
kits, and a full line of supplies for priming your seed with this powerful natural germination enhancer. We also
distribute many unusual books about edible plants, medicinal plants, American Indian, Australian, and African
ethnobotany, books on seed saving, source lists, and more.

We Have Always Known This: A Manifesto for Seeds
By Woody Wodraska
We are seed users, seed eaters, seed growers...all
of us. We have been wrapped in a world of seeds for eons, since
long before agriculture. In hunger we ate the bird that ate the seeds;
in happy accident we brewed the beer from spoiled and worthless seeds;
in unwitting service to the plant we transported its seeds from place
to place on our trouser cuffs. We slobber over ear corn and eat
our Wheaties. It's in our language: We are of our parents' seed,
our ancestors' seed, Adam's seed ultimately. We are born into,
thrive in, die in, a seed sowing, seed garnering heritage. To
deny the status of the sacred to these time capsules, these enfoldments
of life we call seeds is to court foolish disaster. We have
always known this.
But...now they're messing with our seeds. The power grabbing
corporations and their government flunkies propose in their
arrogance and disrespect to irradiate...manipulate...
defructify...monopolize
and further commodify our ancient birthright, our real wealth: SEEDS.
We are
strong when we have our seeds. They would enslave us and
they would use as leverage the seeds we cherish, the seeds that nourish
us.What we would pass on to the seventh generation as bridegift
they seize as strategy. They would put a price on the
priceless and sell it back to us.
Leave our seeds alone. Leave our seeds in the hands of the people
who feed us...the family, the clan, the village group. The
profession of "seedsman" was created only 130 years or so ago.
Perhaps it was an aberration to try to centralize a process that
had before been disbursed in village gardens, homestead gardens,
middens and small fields. Grandmothers and Great-uncles
collected, watched over, cherished the seeds that came down to
them. Grew them out with love and patience and infinite
care. Grandmother's seeds... grandmother's blessing...passed from
generation to generation. Reckon three generations to a century
and 150 centuries in the history of agriculture and you have several
hundred generations of seed gathering folk, seed saving grandcestors,
passing on precious seeds to descendants. There is memory
encapsulated in this line of life stretching so far back.
Feelings are there too...feelings of gratitude to Gaia, of holding
dear, of well wishing to the future generations, feelings of
faithfulness...feminine feelings.
The memory is right there in the seed, in our cells, in the
mitochondrial DNA passed down the feminine line. When I touch my
seeds I tap the memory that is there, instinctive wisdom almost lost,
beaming itself into our consciousness just when it is most needed.
John Trudell said: " It's about our D and A. Descendants and
ancestors. We are the descendants and we are the ancestors. D and A,
our DNA, our blood, our flesh and our bone, is made up of the metals
and the minerals and the liquids of the earth. We are the earth. We
truly, literally and figuratively are the earth. Any relationship we
will ever have in this world to real power-the real power, not energy
systems and other artificial means of authority-but any relationship we
will ever have to real power is our relationship to the earth." (1)
Seeds are concentrated wealth. Seeds are worth far more than we
pay for them now, in the commodity trade. You can pack in a
suitcase $10,000 worth of garden seeds in any variety you choose.
The slavemasters and their propagandists would have us believe that
money is power and, since they have plenty of it, that they are in
control. They don't want us to have that suitcase, to be free to
leave and plant elsewhere; free to stay and plant many gardens, feed
many people with real food.
If we are staunchly of the Earth, her power is ours to neutralize and
transmute the evil work of the authority-mongers, those without
conscience. We can do this with life enhancing
actions. Repeat. Life-affirming actions override, overwhelm
the lifeless. Always the great stone temples of the arrogant
become topsoil for living systems. It's something the
corporations and governments fail to appreciate. Their authority
rests on entropic processes, explosions, coercions, cultural
lies. They cannot take into account the power of life, the
connectedness of life. They would have us forget where we come
from...so we can be entertained and exploited and addicted to their
cheap dream, their gadgets and their ersatz food. If we are
staunchly of the Earth we have access to the strength of the
generations, the ancestory, to help us put life affirming ideas and
actions in the places where death-dealing had been. We can
REMEMBER from where our power comes. Let us plant gardens.
Let us plant trees. Let us tend cows.
Our weapons are our tools...
our ammunition is our seeds...
our fuel is our sacred intent to do right by the future of life on
the Planet...
our marching song is the thrumming of memory in our cells.
We march in concert, but we do not march en masse. Our aim
is not to dominate or overpower. Rather, our aim is
service. Each of us has a plot of earth to serve, our own
elementals and devas to consult...
intuition that speaks in us...we know how to surrender to the
requirements of the task, of plants and soil, in order to earn our
harvest. We bend to the task in joy and service, each individual
one of us mustering pure intent, a gutsy laugh, with the power of life
upholding us.
Join Wendell Berry's Mad Farmers Liberation Front. No dues. No
meetings. You just have to be pissed off enough to be clever.
Don't be depressed, be clever.
Let us be clear. There is no money in this, only
sustenance. This passing forward of DNA on family or clan
level is a matter of right livelihood, not of commerce.
And right livelihood brings joy. If I can feed myself, my family,
a few others perhaps when surplus appears, then I have done something
REAL.I am in touch with my power, and my delight.
JOY...What if the picture that's been drawn of medieval peasant life
as, basically, "Nasty...Brutish...Short" is a cultural con job put out
by the rationalists and the materialists, the ones who shortly would
have something to sell us? What if life on a subsistence level
has joys and satisfactions as well as challenges? What if people
had time to laugh and sing? What if there were still people in
the world who could catch the memory of this and show it to us??
A friend tells me about life in the Philippines, far back on the rural
islands...tells how, when two rice threshers or donkey drivers meet and
begin to talk, they're laughing most of the way through the
conversation. There is something boisterously entertaining
about what is going on in the poverty-stricken lives.
John G. Bennett wrote of an encounter in Africa: "Following a lightly
trodden path, I came upon a Basuto village. All the inhabitants
were out hoeing mealies. Their ages must have ranged from seven
to seventy, and they were singing and hoeing to the rhythm of their own
music. As they saw me they all stopped and stood straight up in
surprise. Then with one accord they began to laugh. I have
never heard such laughter. It was pure joy and friendship,
without malice and without thought. I joined in, and we all
laughed together for several minutes. I waved my hand and walked
on, and they resumed their gravity and their hoeing.
"This was one of the unforgettable moments of my life. A
lifetime's experience had convinced me that happiness is greatest where
material prosperity is least.I had seldom seen a happy rich man,
but I had seen many happy people among the poorest villagers of Asia
Minor or Greece.I had seen happiness in Omdurman, but this
happiness that I saw before my eyes was beyond all the others.
Here was a village totally lacking even the smallest of the benefits of
civilization. They had not even a plough or a cart. And yet
they were the happiest people I had ever seen. They were without
fear and without pride." (2)
They were without fear and without pride. The meek shall inherit
the earth, for the meek remember who they are and where their power
comes from.

First! Activist Judy Bari.

Celtuce (Lactuca sativa asparagina) 1-1.5g/1000 seeds
Other names: celery lettuce, asparagus lettuce, stem lettuce, Wo Ju, Woo Chu, Wo Sun, Stemuretasu, Kaki-Jisha.
Celtuce is native to China. It is mostly grown in South China. It is a cool season crop. Seeds germinate poorly when
temperature is high. Usually, optimum germination temperature is 15-20?. Except special summer cultivars, most celtuces
are sensitive to bolting in hot summer. Shortage of water and fertilizer as well as big day-night temperature difference
may contribute to premature bolting. Recommended planting density: 20-30cm between plants in a row. For commercial
production, transplanting is recommended.
The stem is used for vegetable in China. however, the leaves can be used as lettuce for salads.
#VLs108
Spring: An early variety. Both heat resistant and cold resistant. Oval-shaped leaves in green color. Tender and crisp
flesh is white. It grows well between 8? and 25?. The weight can be 1Kg. Suitable for spring planting.
#VLs109
Summer 38: An early variety. 38 days after transplanting. Heat resistant and good bolting resistant. It grows well at
18?-32?.Tender and crisp flesh is white. The weight can be 1Kg. Suitable for summer and fall planting.
#VLs112
Nahan: It is highly tolerant to cold and grows well at 5?-18?. Green stem with white tender flesh inside. The weight
can be 1Kg. This variety bolts in hot weather, like summer.

The most productive cultivars at this time are the pure Russian
cultivars, expect 7 kilograms of berries per plant. The cultivars
released from the University of Saskatchewan are hybrids, but less
productive, 4 kilograms of berries per plant.
In order to take softwood cuttings, you would require a license from
the University of Saskatchewan.
2 genetically different cultivars that flower at the same time are
required for the best fruit set.

Clifty View Nursery in Idaho. I haven't bought from them, but my friend
Nate recommended them to me.
http://www.cliftyview.com/
Cold Stream Farm Nursery. They offer several species of trees that were a
little harder to source at other nurseries for wholesale prices, but they
don't require bulk orders, though they price break at quantity.
I had moderate success with their trees this year. some arrived in amazing
shape, some a little scraggly. we had a late cold season this year, so I'm
still waiting another week before contacting them re: waking up of trees. I
too am working on a shoestring budget, so I bought the smallest trees which
may have been part of the reason. you may want to call and talk directly to
someone at the nursery before ordering.

also, here's a couple of bareroot sources our friend Michael Janik
recommends http://www.michaelsapples.com/links.html
And I always check to see if there is a nearby state tree nursery (check
division and department of forestry for your state, and other states) some
will ship out of state. I've bought from Virginia and Colorado and here in
Nevada. sometimes they have great trees and usually the prices are ~$1-2
per tree. often require bulk orders 25-50 in a bundle. I found Lespedeza
bicolor and Amorpha fruticosa at the Virginia dept. which were hard for me
to source from other location for a reasonable price. some links.

List of Safe Seed Companies ~ Please Share
https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150125798706208&id=631228445
by Adrianne Schmidt on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 12:26pm
The first list below is a list of Safe Seed Companies- the first few listed under each region sell only organic- then those below sell some conventional seed as well, but it is noted if they sell Monsanto seed. If they do, avoid their conventional seed or check the second list, which lists Monsanto's vegetable varieties.
The second list below is a list of popular Monsanto seed. It would be very lenghty if all were included, but there are links to Monsanto's products pages so that you might do further research. Many seed re-sellers buy seed from a broker who has purchased a huge block of seed, the broker breaks up the order, and then re-sells to numerous mail-order seed companies. So, many companies carry the same seed. And unfortunately many of these seed companies then re-name the seed, adding to the further confusion as to which is a Monsanto seed. :-(

Popular Monsanto (Seminis) seeds-
for full listing of Seminis seeds hit vegetable name, which will take you to appropriate Seminis' page. To see De Ruiter varieties hit De Ruiter link under cucumber, eggplant, tomato, pepper. To make things even more confusing, each mail-order seed company might resell the same seed but use a different name for it. The only way you can be 100% positive you are not buying a Monsanto seed is to check with the re-seller or buy from a company selling their own seed or organic or open-pollinated.

As an alternative way to shop for seed, visit the non-profit Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) Organic Seeds Database- www.omri.org/seeds - lists certified "final handlers" for organic seed. List is by produce. Pick a vegetable and find a seller.
Here are some of the brand names that Monsanto owns and 'packages' their seeds as:
American Seeds, Asgrow, Campbell, DeKalb, De Ruiter, Diener Seeds, Fielder's Choice, Fontanelle, Gold Country Seed, Hawkeye, Heartland, Heritage Seeds, Holdens, HPS Seed, Hubner Seed, icorn, Jung Seed, Kruger Seeds, Lewis Hybrids, Peotec, Poloni, Rea Hybrids, R.H. Shumway, Seeds of the World, Seminis, Seymour's Selected Seeds, Specialty, Stewart, Stone Seed,Totally Tomatoes, Trelay, Vermont Bean Seed Company, Western Seeds. ****
But remember seed companies buy Monsanto seed in bulk
and then repackage it under their name as well...

awaiting word from the lawyers, let's keep our push going and order

*Celtuce (Lactuca sativa) seed:*
(Asparagus Lettuce)
Romaine-like foliage with a meaty stem that grows 6 to 8 inches long and up
to 2 inches in diameter. Sweet tasting (never bitter). Can be consumed
fresh or cooked. Scrumptiously artichoke-ey.
200 Seeds/pkt, Open Pollinated
http://www.horizonherbs.com/group.asp?grp=59&pgNUM=2
*Beetberry (Chenopodium capitatum) seeds, organic:*
(Strawberry spinach, Raspberry chenopodium)
Family: Chenopodiaceae
Days to maturity: 40 to 60
Growing to only about 8 inches tall, the sweeping branches bear many soft
leaves and are studded with multitudes of berries. Sweet but strange,
bright red, heavily seeded berries occur all along the stems of this
lamb's-quarters-like plant. The berries make a colorful and edible accent in
the garden and in salads. The greens are deliciously edible in salads or as
a pot herb. Best yet, the parsnip-like roots are crispy, sweet, and
delicious, white but marbled with beet red, with just a hint of beetiness to
the taste, and may be consumed fresh or cooked in soups. This last fact was
discovered by the ever-roving mind and fingers of our gardener, Erich, who
has been known to discover new, delicious, and nontoxic edibles
in unexpected places. Plant prefers full sun to part shade and regular
garden soils. Sow in spring. Easy germination. 100 Seeds/pkt, Certified

Subject: [SANET-MG] Wineberries: A Natural Crop with Promise

I don't know why Rubus phoenicolasius, the Wineberry, should be so
uncommon. It is no more difficult to grow than a raspberry, to which it
is closely related. What is more, it has something to offer at most
seasons of the year. Native to Korea and China as well as Japan, this
vigorous deciduous shrub grows to 2.5m or 3m tall. These berries offer
market farmers or direct marketers ease of propagation, a unique and
tasty product that will sell for a great price. Unfortunately, 2 states
have classified it as an invasive but the plant is easily controlled
when properly cultivated. We have been growing wineberries in 2 states
for over 10 years and have had no problems at all.
The species is a perennial plant which bears biennial stems ("canes")
from the perennial root system. In its first year, a new stem grows
vigorously to its full height of 1-3 m, unbranched, and bearing large
pinnate leaves with three or five leaflets; normally it does not produce
any flowers. In its second year, the stem does not grow taller, but
produces several side shoots, which bear smaller leaves always with
three leaflets; the leaves are white underneath.

"Wineberries A Plant with Commercial Promise"
The flowers are produced in late spring on short, very bristly racemes
on the tips of these side shoots, each flower 6--10 mm diameter with
five purplish red to pink petals and a bristly calyx. The fruit is
orange or red, about 1 cm diameter, edible, produced in summer or early
autumn; in botanical terminology, it is not a berry at all, but an
aggregate fruit of numerous drupelets around a central core. Ripening
occurs from early summer. The canes have fine, red thorns, which appear
much like red hair.
In addition to seed propagation, new plants are formed from the tips of
existing canes touching the ground. They enjoy moist soil and grow near
and within wooded areas.
As a fruit develops, it is surrounded by a protective calyx covered in
hairs that exude tiny drops of sticky fluid. The Wineberry has
orange-red bristles thick as down on its arching stems and protective
calyces. These stems show up well in winter, especially when sunlight
strikes them. Just like the raspberry it is biennial; that is, the canes
grow one year and fruit the next. The emerald-green leaves are up to
18cm long with white felted undersides, and are composed of three,
coarsely toothed, rounded, ovate or heart-shaped leaflets.
In early summer the small, star-like, whitish-pink, self-fertile flowers
emerge shyly, encased in a calyx - bristly armour made up of five long,
triangular bracts. Small, glistening, conical, orange-red fruit follow
in early August. These remain almost surrounded by the calyx until they
are ripe. This keeps the berries safe from the birds until they are
ready to pick.
You can eat them straight off the canes or cook them in the same way as
raspberries. As Coral Guppy of Kore Wild Fruits Nursery puts it: "The
Japanese wineberry nicely bridges the gap between summer and autumn
raspberries."
Every year I can hardly wait to pop my first wineberry of the season
into my mouth. Heavens! How can such a small, tiny ruby-red berry
taste so yummy?! This is a berry bush that has excellent potential as a
family favorite or as a good seller at farm stands or farmer's markets.
It also can be easily propagated by the farmer or gardener so once you
have some growing plants you won't need to buy more: you can produce as
many as you want. This is a good thing since there are only 2
nurseries in America that offer the plants for sale.
Fortunately, the Resilience Research Farm is licensed as a Missouri
grower and plants are available from Back40Books.com. The plants are
available in two sizes and are dug and shipped as orders arrive so you
are insured of fresh, viable stock. The plants are shipped in a
soil-less mix in plastic bags. They are NOT dormant bare root plants,
they are shipped Priority Mail fully leafed out. Nursery stock can not
be shipped to Massachusetts or Connecticut.
The plants are available in two sizes (all plants will bear the year
following planting):
For More Information click here:
http://www.back40books.com/item.asp?b=1&n=NPSWBS
All plants are shipped with planting, maintenance, and propagation
instructions included or e-mailed.
/**/*Growing tips*
Plant the Japanese wineberry in adequately drained but fertile soil,
preferably in a sheltered place. You will get the best fruit against a
sunny wall. Water well in summer. You can tie the canes along wires,
cutting out those that have fruited and tying in the replacements.
Because the stems are vigorous you can pinch them back in spring to
encourage branching. In theory, wineberries should be prone to pests and
diseases that assail raspberries, but in practice they are rarely
troubled. Birds and insects find it difficult to get at the fruits
through the calyces.
*Propagation*
To increase your stock, bury the cane tips in the soil in late summer.
(Japanese wineberry roots so effectively that you must take care to
prevent the arching stems of shrubs grown in the open from touching the
ground.) Or, you can take hardwood cuttings in late autumn.
Feel free to mail the writer if more information is required, however
there is a nice selection of photos included in the link above.
