Well after a couple days of touring and very little sleep, we headed off to the hospital to start some cardiac surgery. I've been in the ICU and so my work starts when theirs finishes! The ICU doctors here are very knowledgeable and are limited mostly by lack of equipment that works and having to use old drugs that are no longer heard of in north america... We are day 3 into the mission and so far so good, or in spanish "mas or menos bien!"
The group we have works together really well so time flies by. The spanish culture is very friendly and so we all have to kiss on the cheek in morning rounds. I'm thinking of introducing that in Canada when I get back :0)
When it's quiet in the ICU before the patient arrives we slip out to the nearby market to bargain in spanish at the craft shops! There crafts are amazing. It seems they can make anything.
So far I have steered away from the GI probs that have hit some, and i'm tolerating altitude ok, except for numbness and tingling from the altitude meds!
We are headed into 3 very busy days now with sick patients and long nights. Wish us luck!!
