VESTIGES — Book One
Three advanced solos for guitar by John Hayes. These pieces are the first of an intended series of descriptive works based on images, imagination and history.
VESTIGES were conceived as individual guitar solos with the original opus numbers 112, 115 and 113 respectively. Because of their common pro-genesis in atavistic imagination Book One has now been established as part of a series under the one opus number of 122. It is the composer's intention to write more music in this genre and so this volume has been named Book One.

Each solo has a subtitle. And In Arcadia... is subtitled South Hill and refers to the hill between two estuaries, those of the Sussex Ouse and the Cuckmere, which terminates in the dramatic white cliffs of Seaford Head. The work is about the early stone-age settlers and their mysterious existence. It was completed in January 2008.
Silva Sub Castro translates as Wood Under the Castle and is subtitled A Trysting Place. This opus was completed in April 2008.
Carausius was in charge of a fleet of ships in the English Channel and appointed himself Emperor of Britain in 286 A.D. He was an infamous usurper and a pirate, hence the subtitle The Pirate. This piece was completed in December 2008.
