Artists & Storytellers

Craft: Choose a famous Canadian artist (some examples are Emily Carr, Ted Harrison, and the members of the Group of Seven) and look at some of their work, online or in a book. Then dig out some art supplies, and try copying one of their pieces. Tell someone about your art, including how it's the same as, and different from the original. Here's an example of how to try painting like Ted Harrison.

STEM: People who create art, music, and stories know that all three are full of numbers! Find someone you know who writes, paints, draws, takes photos, sings, or plays music, and ask them to show you how they use numbers in their work. Then give it a try for yourself!

Writing Prompt: Imagine an animal wanted to play an instrument. Which instrument would it be, and why do they want to play it? What happens when they try?

Go Outside: On a sunny day, go downtown and look for buskers -- people who play music on the sidewalk for everyone to enjoy. When you find them, listen for a song or two, and be sure to give them a wave and a "thanks!" (and maybe a coin or two) when you go.

If you don't have any buskers in your area, go for a walk around town and find some public art, like murals and statues, or even graffiti or chalk art on the sidewalk. Pick your favourite, and tell someone else how to find it!
