Long Weekend at Mohonk Preserve in New York

Due to the success of last year’s trip to Mohonk, in which Scouts cleaned the campsite very well, we were able to do it again this year from Thursday, June 15th, to Sunday, June 18th. On the 15th we loaded the trailer and headed to New Paltz, New York, where Mohonk Preserve is located. With eleven youth and four adults, our campsite was located on a trail, and there is a resort (Mohonk Mountain House) at the top of a mountain. We unloaded the trailer, set up tents at each site, had sloppy joes for dinner and slept.

On the 16th we woke up, had breakfast, got our water and supplies ready, and headed out for the “Lemon Squeeze”, a narrow 60’ tall passageway that took Scouts up to the top of a cliff. We had lunch on the top, went to a tower on the top of the mountain to climb, then visited the resort. We then walked back separately on different trails. Some long, some short, some easy, some difficult. We had dinner and slept.

On Saturday, some Scouts went through a steep, long, and rocky labyrinth. We also hiked near the resort, and some Scouts scrambled through a boulder field. We had warmed up pizza for lunch, and freeze dried hiking meals for dinner. We drove to a cold spring to swim. For dessert we had our traditional Mohonk treat—a portion of ice cream sundae served out of a rain gutter.

On Sunday we packed up and drove 3-1/2 hours home.
