Scott L Miller Watercolors:

A Life-Artist at Work

Thanks for visiting.

I am an amateur artist who works exclusively in the media of drawing and watercoloring. Realistic rather than abstract or expressionistic, my work most closely falls in the tradition of the classical atelier. I am interested in painting the world as it is and in doing so to "love what is."

Drawing and painting, for me, are disciplines of seeing. Modern cognitive psychology teaches us that our vision only partly consists of what we actually see--our brains add the rest from pre-scripted grey-matter data. Thus when we see casually we don't really see. I wish to see truly. For me such seeing is an act of worship. As a mystic and romantic, a classic "lover" archetype in the Jungian sense, and a person who clings to faith in an all-loving Creator, I love and follow beauty in all its languages, and the language of light, color, shadow, and form is of course one of beauty's most eloquent languages. In endeavoring to see truly, I find it important to consult references to "reality." Thus I paint directly from living sources (e.g., plein-aire landscapes) and from photographs.

Having said all of the above, I find it important to assert proudly that there is nothing avant-garde about my work. I bear no grudges against modern artistic movements, but my work is classical in spirit and treats classical subjects: landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and figures.
