Surviving Locomotives of the Lehigh Valley Railroad
Welcome to the Lehigh Valley Railroad surviving locomotives list! The goal of this page is to find and track every surviving LV locomotive, to document where they have been, and "what they are doing now", since 1976. Also, this list is being maintained with the hope and goal of fostering preservation! to potentially match up preservation opportunities with candidate locomotives. Because to preserve a locomotive, the first step is learning it exists!
This chart, above, contains all LV locomotives that existed on 3/31/1976, the LV's last day of operation. Then their status since '76 is recorded with the color codes.
EMD SW1
LV 112
SW1 112 is the oldest surviving LV locomotive, built in 4/3/1939.
2006: Rockwood, TN - WOW! LV EMC SW1 #112 still exists and is STILL in her LV paint! amazing! making her (most likely) the last, and only, former LV engine still in her original LV paint. (RS3 211 and C420 414 have been *repainted* in their LV colors.. not original) Retired by LV early 1976, before Conrail- sold to a dealer, who then sold it in 1977 to "Direct Reduction Co." of Rockwood, TN
January 2008: 112 has been sold! bought by Scott Kwiatkowski of Pennsy Railcar. She will be moved from her decades-long resting place in Tennesee, to the Pennsy Railcar shop in New Jersey, where plans are to restore her to operating condition, and repaint into her original LV "pre-war" paintscheme! She will then operate with the the Black River & Western in Ringoes NJ. (2008)
2015: LV 112 has been repainted, with new green paint, and lettered as BRW 400, and is operating with the Black River & Western Railroad in Flemington NJ. It was painted because it really needed new paint, and it is still planned to eventually re-paint it in its original as-delivered 1939 LV "pre war" paintscheme.

EMD SW8
The Lehigh Valley had 27 EMD SW8's, the largest population of a single diesel model on the LV. Eighteen of the 28 were the famous "pups" that operated on the Hazleton branch. They were equipped with dynamic brakes (very unusual for switchers) and could MU on both ends. The LV ran them in sets of four, five, or more, operating them the same way another railroad might use road units.

Upon Conrail's breakup into CSX and NS in 1999, the 4 units were transferred to Norfolk Southern. They then became NS numbers 2881, 2882, 2883, 2884
All four units were rebuilt by NS between 2003 and 2006, were re-classified as GP38-2's, and renumbured at rebuilding to NS 5655, 5516, 5627, 5659.

LV GP38-2 No. 322. Buffalo, NY. Photographer unknown. Guy Fluck collection, used with permission.
EMD GP38-2
The LV bought twelve EMD GP-38-2 locomotives new from EMD in late 1972. The LV's last new EMD's, they were all delivered in the last LV scheme, Cornell Red with "billboard" yellow lettering. They wore no other scheme during their career with the LV.
Their time with the LV was short, less than 4 years. After the LV was absorbed into Conrail on 4/1/76, the twelve GP38-2's, along with the twelve Alco C-420's, were sold to the D&H. The D&H added a "7" to the GP38-2 numbers. many remained in LV red for many years, two were in LV red well into the 1990's!
Upon the D&H being incorporated into the Canadian Pacific in 1991, the locomotives yet again had a new owner. Some of the following history information is from Joshua Blay's excellent page on the LV GP-38-2's..which traces their history with the LV, D&H, Guilford, and CP.. the page can be found here: http://www.joshuakblay.com/gp382.html

They all operated on the LV until Conrail on 4/1/76. At that time they were all sold to the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, (Along with the twelve LV GP38-2's) where they retained their LV numbers. They then all operated with the D&H until 1987, when they were sold by D&H to "Delaware-Maryland-Virginia Co." in March, 1987.
After they left the D&H, the locomotives no longer operated as a group on one railroad, they were split up. See individual locomotive entries for more specific post-D&H history information.

GE U23B
And now we come to the very last locomotives ever owned by the Lehigh Valley Railroad, the twelve GE U23B's of 1974.
By 1974, the end was in sight. Planning had already begun in Washington DC for what would soon become Conrail. Congress passed the "3R Act" in 1973, which authorized the USRA to begin planning for Conrail, in an effort to save the North East rail network, which was on the verge of collapse. It was believed at the time that only the US Government could step in and save the rail network, which was still very vital to the economic health of the USA. (This turned out to be accurate, and Conrail did in fact save and preserve the North East rail network!) But that was yet to come..
The LV had a small amount of new power in the early 1970's, Four GP38AC's and the Dozen GP38-2's. But apart from those sixteen units, the rest of the LV fleet was getting on in years, the Alco C628's were spending a lot of time in the shop, and more new units were still necessary to keep the trains rolling while Conrail was being worked out.
The USRA financed the LV's final dozen locomotives, the twelve U-boats, and because of this the LV's U23B's are often said to be "the first Conrail locomotives", which is essentially true. They arrived new in December 1974, not yet painted for Conrail though, and instead arrived in the LV's standard final scheme of "Late Cornell Red with billboard lettering and yellow stripe", the same scheme worn by the GP38-2's.
The U-boats served a very short time with the LV, December 1974 to the "end of the line" on March 31, 1976, only 15 months! barely more than a year. However because everyone knew Conrail was coming, railfans were out in force during those last months, and the U-boats were heavily photographed during this time, which we are all grateful for decades later.
On April 1, 1976 "Conrail's first locomotives" formally joined the new Conrail roster, becoming CR 2777 - 2788. All soon received Conrail blue and operated with Conrail for another 15 years, until being retired in 1991. At that time, many of the LV U-boats went on to further careers.
LV 502
(LV 502) (CR 2778) (WIMX 2778)
1974: Built new as LV 502
1976: to Conrail 2778

2012: LV 502, as WIMX 2778, is no longer operating, stored on a siding in Camden, NJ.
2015 - January: LV 502, as WIMX 2778, is still stored in Camden NJ.
LV 503
(LV 503) (CR 2779) (VULX 2779)

1974: Built new as LV 508
1976: to Conrail 2784
1991: Retired by Conrail
1994: Traded to GE

2003: Status change, 12/14/2003, unit is now with "Whitestone Supply" in Alliance Ohio.
2008: May 2008, unit has been sold and repainted! now operating with "Lafarge" in Alliance Ohio. kept the name "Fast Eddie"
2011: Status change, January 2011. LV 508 has been sold again, this time to Larry's Truck & Electric. She was seen lettered as LTEX 2784. LTEX could be a bad sign..a unit like 508 could be parts fodder, (old U-boats arent exactly in high demand) then scrapped! although Larry does also re-sell, re-power and lease a lot of units as well..so hopefully this is just another stage in 508's nomadic wanderings.. We will have to keep an eye on her. (2011)
2011: UPDATE March 2011 - A happy ending to the LTEX story! LV 508 was refurbished by Larry, repainted into "Ohio State colors", and sold to Shelly Materials. Shelly Materials 2784 is now operating in Linndale, Ohio. (Cleveland) (2012) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6zlPw3KWpc

1991: Retired by Conrail
2004: Operating at Millard Quarry, Anneville PA, owned by Pennsylvania Lime (formerly Pennsy Supply) (formerly Wimpey Minerals) lettered as Pennsy Supply 2785.
2009: 2785 is now OOS, and is stored on a siding at Millards, PA.

Me and the LV..
I was born in Sayre PA in 1969..10 years too late! ;) and was only 7 years old in 1976 when the LV "gave up the ghost".. back then I was basically unaware of trains..even though I lived within earshot of where the EL crossed over the LV! (oh to have a time machine..) I only have 1 memory of the LV, walking to Ithaca st. school in Waverly and crossing the LV main..seeing some BIG white engines..must have been snow birds! :)
I grew up in Waverly and began taking photos of trains around 1983-84. I never saw an ex-LV engine on Conrail..but there was still some PC black engines floating around then.. (saw a lot of Lehigh ghosts on the D&H however! :)
My first ever train photo was taken with a 110 camera, its a Conrail GP30, still in Reading paint, taken from the walkbridge in Sayre in 1983..I was 14. I soon took over my Dad's Agfa 35mm rangefinder! ;) and managed to beat it up over the next few years carrying it around the Valley on my 10-speed bike! (before I turned 16, the bike was my life!)
I spent a great deal of the mid and late 80's along the southern tier main in Waverly, on the walkbridge in Sayre, and out in Binghamton.. lots of great D&H and Susquehanna Alcos still around back then! and seemingly thousands of Conrail SD-40-2's. I was a member of the original "Valley Railroad Museum" in the Sayre station back in the 80's.. We had a great model railroad in the museum! had Waverly, Sayre and Athens modeled on it.. and a fantastic collection of LV memorabilia..
I left for College in '87 (SUNY New Paltz) and the original museum was forced to leave the station sometime while I was away..the collection moved to storage in Towanda, and I just read a new group is re-forming a museum in the Sayre station! :) (as this is being written in 2003) great news.. im hoping my train photos from '84 - '86 are still with the collection. I donated them back in '87. 3 big photo albums.. (I dont want them back..just want to know they are there!)
Also, both of my Grandfathers worked their whole working lives for the LV in Sayre, long before I was born. Daniel Lawrence - was an engineer on the LV, worked the Auburn division out of Sayre. I still remember his stories about running LV Wyomings! and Edwin "Polly" Kremer - my Mom's Dad..worked in the Sayre Shops..
Here is the new group in Sayre.. the station is now owned by the town (Sayre)

Today I live in Rochester, NY. The land of CSX , R&S, and LA&L..still have Alcos around! :)
