Lehigh Valley Raillroad Survivors

Updates

This is a "sub page" of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Survivors list.  The main page, the list of surviving equipment, is here:

https://sites.google.com/site/scotlawrence/lvrr-survivors

This page, the "updates" page, contains a roughly chronological account of LV locomotives and equipment that is sadly no longer with us, scrapped. :(  It contains data on the scrapped equipment, and timelines of events.

Here is some additional information on the U23B's:

 All built November 1974

All retired by Conrail 05/09/91 - 3 units reactivated 11/92 and retired again on 03/08/93

None of the units have ever been rebuilt.

    Build #

 LV 501    CR 2777      40098      to RBMN 2396, 4/3/97

LV 502    CR 2778      40099      leased Wimpey Minerals

 LV 503    CR 2779      40100

 LV 504    CR 2780      40101      to Reading & Northern 2395, 4/3/97

 LV 505    CR 2781      40102      to RBMN 2394 10/3/96

 LV 506    CR 2782      40103      to RBMN 2393, 11/14/96

 LV 507    CR 2783      40104      reactivated 11/92, retired 3/8/93

 LV 508    CR 2784      40105

 LV 509    CR 2785      40106      to Wimpy Minerals 2785

 LV 510    CR 2786      40107      react 11/92, retire 3/8/93, Wimpey 2786

 LV 511    CR 2787      40108

 LV 512    CR 2788      40109      reactivated 11/92, retired 3/8/93

It was rumoured that 2 R&N units were sold to (now) defunct Quincy Bay Terminal RR, which is now Fore River Transportation, and are now possibly stored in New England somewhere. (possibly LV 501 and 505?) unfortunately this was found not to be the case..I have determined that Quincy Bay Terminal only owned one U23B, #21, and she was not a former LV U-boat. (see this thread)

SW900m

LV 120 to 130 started out as NW1's of 1937 and 1938 vintage.

in the 50's, they were all sent to EMD, over the span of a few years, (not all at once) and they returned as SW900m's..they were 90% rebuilt..Some consider them different engines after they came back, some consider them the same engines, but heavily rebuilt. its a grey area. To confuse it even further, the later ones received new builders numbers, but the earlier rebuilds didn't..

LV kept all the same road numbers, before and after the rebuilds.

EMD SW900m 106 - sold 1975 (Western Electric/Pittsburgh #76)

SW900m 130 survives! (see above)

" This unit was involved in a horrible head-on wreck with a gas-electric car on the Rochester Branch in the 1940s. Was rebuilt by the LVRR, however. Retired by CR 11 April 1985. At Igloo Cellar Site (former U.S. Army Black Hills Ordnance Depot) near Edgemont, SD July, 1987. Numbered CMC (Consolidated Management Corp.) 8657 and painted a light tan. I drove over to the depot on lay-off from BN in Gillette, WY, hoping to photograph the 8657. Alas, the manager refused permission so I drove back home in disgust. Never got back over there to photograph the unit, however. Oh well." - Paul J. Templeton

Alco S4 167 - sold to Steelton & Highspire RR #67 in 1969. cut down to slug #67 in 1977.

South Buffalo railway auctioned off some Alco switchers around 1990.

at least one was a former LVRR Alco S2. (Redden)

More Alco switcher information, from "Pontiac 59"

there's a few more on the Buffalo Southern - they have a string of former South Buffalo Alco S-types stored and one operable, believe at least one is a former LV unit (SB had 151, 159, 164, 165 r/n as 107-106-105-104).  The other potential survivors include: one of the 5 that went to the B&O (150)  went to Silcott and then to Southeast Coal, Irving KY (as #500), in 1974 (unknown past that point) and another (153) went to Youngstown Sheet & Tube in 1979 after serving as B&O 9146.  Another one (158 ) went to Lone Star Steel #12 (Lone Star, TX) after T-I to Alco in 1965.   S1 #117 last reported as Vulcan Materials #5789 (Geismar LA) 1978.  Steelton & Highspire 66 was LV S4 166 (167 to S&H 67, then to a slug). From X2200S #76 for July-Aug-Sept 1982.   Lehigh Valley disposed of all 539-engine power in the early to mid '60's; anything I didn't list either is listed as cut up or traded in with no further disposition.

The WNY Railway Historical Society's Alco S2, former South Buffalo #77, is not a former LV unit. -Scot

update - February 2, 2004.

I recieved a note from Patrick Connors. of the Buffalo Southern RR . concerning BSOR 104 & 106

"There has been much question as to the whereabouts of 104 and 106. 106 was indeed purchased by the BSOR when South Buffalo auctioned off their fleet of Alcos. It was dismantled at the steel plant. I say it this way because it was not completly cut up. The trucks and wheels were taken from underneath for spares on the other BSOR S2s and 4s. The block was removed for possible use in 107. While it was sitting on blocks with parts removed, it tipped over on its side....thus sealing it's fate. The remains were cut up...some parts taken to BSOR shops, while most of the frame and heavy metal scrap. The front nose and cab section are still together, though may get scrapped soon.

The 104, I am not sure of. There is an effort in the works to write a history of the South Buffalo with a complete roster. As the details are worked out, more light may be shed on this locomotive. It is possible that this unit ended up with Winter's Railroad Services S2's that are stored at North Collins, NY and may also have been cut up."

- Patrick Connors.

(note..LV 164 / SB 104 has been found!  at Citisteel in Claymont, DE, )

The LV retired, scrapped or traded in all her Baldwin locomotives before Conrail.

cut up in same gon. it went over the hump, according to hump cndr carded for

                                roanoke va,which mean s a 15t/35q trip. I climbed up into the car,(hope no

bosses reading this)to verify the number, and did get disposable camera

                                photo's of it's hump trip,but if we're correct on the number Ex-lv gp-38ac # 311

July 3, 2006           LV GP38AC 310 is NOT, repeat NOT, scrapped afterall! :)

LV 1000, passenger car, was sadly scrapped..I moved her data here:

LV 1000  - Dining car , located in Marietta, GA.     -(2003)

The following is from "The Route of the Weekend Chief", by Mike Boland, published in the Autumn 1995 issue of The Keystone.

posted here by "jhdeasy"

In August 1961, the LIRR purchased Lehigh Valley # 1000, an arch-roof diner with an aluminum kitchen and a charcoal stove. During the late 1961 summer season, it saw brief service with white-coated waiters on train # 28, "The Weekender." The car was later named TUSCARORA CLUB. Dining car service was upgraded for its inauguration during the 1962 season. Service was offered on Fridays on train # 26, "The East Ender." On Sunday evening, it returned to the city with full-course dinners available. At other times, when the car was in service, evening snacks and continental breakfasts were served."

"At the end of the 1964 season, dining car service was discontinued. While it was a clever idea, it was an expensive proposition. McNamara went ahead with it because his able assistant, Willie Wilson, oversaw its operation. Unfortunately, it turned out to be more trouble than it was worth; the railroad was not adequately prepared to operate it. Stocking the car with provisions for two dinner runs a week that began over 100 miles apart (Jamaica and Montauk) proved to be too difficult. Still, it lasted for three seasons and the car was used as a 48 seat lounge after its kitchen was closed."

Diner TUSCARORA CLUB, various heavyweight parlor cars and open platform observation car JAMAICA were used for a New York Chapter NRHS excursion from New York to Montauk and return on Sunday September 30, 1962. The excursion ticket was $12; a buffet dinner was available on TUSCARORA CLUB for an additional $4.

In 1963, leaving Montauk at 6:43 PM on Sunday nights, "The Sundowner" had two or three Fairbanks-Morse H16-44 diesels, eight parlors, a diner and at least six P72 coaches.

In 1964, diner service (presumably on TUSCARORA CLUB) was offered on the following trains:

-- train # 16 "The Advance Cannonball" on Thursday

-- train # 26 "The Weekender" on Friday (first section)

-- train # 4011 "The Sundowner" on Sunday

-- train #3 "The Cannonball" on Monday

The car was deadheaded east to Montauk on Sunday night train # 4020 to position it for its westbound revenue run to Jamaica on train # 3 on Monday morning.

TUSCARORA CLUB was used by the PRR in the consist of an all-parlor car special train from New York to Philadelphia and return for the 1964 Army-Navy football game.

1911 - Built new for the Lehigh Valley by Pullman as baggage club car LV 1000.

1929 - Rebuilt by the LV to a full club car.

1939 - Rebuilt by the LV in 1939 for assignment to the "John Wilkes"

1953 - Rebuilt by the LV with 24 dining seats and 22 club seats. modernized with streamlined appearance.

1961 - Sold to the Long Island Railroad, august 1961. Briefly numbered 2005 before being assigned number LIRR 2037,

named TUSCARORA CLUB by the LIRR.

1970 - May - rebuilt to full parlor car by LIRR, Kitchen removed. rebuilt using parts from retired 2011 MONTAUK, and renumbured

LIRR 2037 ONTEORA (2nd). The new name (ONTEORA) was applied to the car at a later date, sometime between

June 1971 and 1972.

1972-1974 - sold to private owner.

1974 - Moved to Marietta GA and made part of a restaurant complex.

2008 - The owner of the former restaurant needs to sell the car, the city of Marietta tells her they want her to get rid of the car, claiming it is "deteriorated, unsightly and detracts from the community." The owner puts out pleas to the railfan community, asking for help in finding it a home, and letting us know the car needs to be sold at auction.

2008 - October 29 - LV1000 is sold at auction for $423, bought by GVT, future plans of her owners are as yet unknown.

2009 - October - the car is scrapped in place, never moved from the restaurant in Marietta. CSX would not move the car on its own wheels, citing its age and condition. GVT offered the car "as is where is" plus $2500 to anyone who wanted to relocate the car and save it. they had no takers. Moving the car out by truck was not an option, not economically sound..only option remaining was to scrap the car.

The unit was in bad shape..

This leaves only one LV U23 remaining at RMDI, LV 510.

which is good shape! and was last operating in 2007.

the unit is now BDLX 2786. Will this be the LV U23B to go to Sayre?? hopefully!

LV Surviving locomotive count drops from 57 to 56 units..

Thanks to Travis Prevost for keeping an eye on the status of LV 511, and confirming when she was finally scrapped.

October 2009. - the Third update for October 2009, LV "Tool Car" 94141 exists in Ithaca NY.

with the small display at the LVRR Ithaca station. (was once the "Station Resturant", is now (in 2009) a Chemung Canal Bank branch

Faint "Lehigh Valley" lettering is visible across the top, under the paint, and a road number is faintly visible on both sides..(you can see the raised outline of the old lettering under the newer green paint..the lettering was simply painted over, but thankfully not removed before painting..)

It is LV car 94140...

looking through  "Lehigh Valley Railroad Passenger Cars, photo and diagram book No.1 " LV 94140 ended its LV career as a "service car"..its a coach converted to work train service at Sayre..

94140 began life as an 800 or 900 series coach, built by Pullman in 1914.

I dont yet know its original number..

UPDATES March 14, 2011

Update!

New LV caboose found! a few weeks ago Roger Kirkpatrick sent me this link:

http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM8Q ... Lee_MA_USA

showing a mystery LV caboose in Lee, Massachusetts.

I did a little digging, and discovered its located at the "Sullivan Station Restaurant"

I emailed the restaurant, asking if they knew the Conrail number, or any other numbers..

they wrote back and said their caboose was Conrail 18679.

which according to: http://crcaboose.railfan.net/renum.htm

makes it LV 95004!

Another LV caboose found! but its LV number is currently unknown.

again, thanks to Roger Kirkpatrick for tracking this one down.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/tall_dude/5503268503/in/pool-73276185@N00

This caboose belongs to the "Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway." of Iowa.

and it is their caboose No. 755? (cant tell the middle digit from the photo, I think its a 5)

AAR reporting marks CIC.

CIC also has two ex-Reading North Eastern cabooses.

Big news! one of the parade float models built at the Sayre shops has been FOUND! in California:

see this thread for details:

http://forums.railfan.net/forums.cgi?bo ... 1287897981

I assumed it was steel, but it might be made of wood.

(although it looks like metal..)

Dominic, the owner, never did respond with his plans for it..

but its continued survival at this point is probably quite secure.

see the "other" page for more detail.

LV 414 has been sold! To the Delaware-Lackawanna railroad.

see the locomotive page for more details.

December 17, 2011

The fate of her two Texas sisters, LV 505 and 506, still remains unknown. They are no longer with Texas Utilities, but where they went, and their fate, remains a mystery. It is likely they are also scrapped, but never give up hope! 507 magically appeared in 2012, even though her appearance was brief and she didnt survive long..her sisters 505 and 506 could still be out there somewhere.

photo here: http://www.fwarailfan.net/community/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2579

October 2012 - big update! some sad news, some good news!

The scrapping of LV U-boats continues!

Since I started this LV survivor list in 2003, FIVE LV U23B's have been scrapped! The two latest victims:

The sad saga of LV U23B 510.

510 was the last (of three) LV U23B's that were stored at RMDI in Pittston, PA.

It was hoped that 510 would be the locomotive that would be preserved in Sayre! Perhaps someday soon to be painted up in Cornell Red and displayed alongside the Sayre station, home of the Sayre Historical Society.

However, sadly it was not to be..

The Sayre Historical Society had a LV U23B donated to them by RMDI in Pittston, PA, back in 2004. Exactly which U-boat was never quite certain..(there were three different LV U23B's at RMDI at different times) In 2004, at the time of the donation, the Sayre Historical Society had just recently formed, and was just getting their museum underway.

The museum was not yet formally open, and priorties were given to actually opening the museum, and so the "locomotive project" went into a fund-raising mode. (the SHS needed to raise the funds to move the locomotive to Sayre) Finally, in 2011, the SHS again contacted RMDI about the locomotive..

Things had changed..due to circumstances beyond the control of the Sayre Historical Society, the project fell through, and the locomotive was scrapped in January of 2012.

LV 507, one of the long-mysterious "Texas U-boats" was found in 2012! unfortunately, she left Texas only to be scrapped!

507, last known as Texas Utilities 23012, (yes, that is correct, 23012, a 5-digit number) left Texas for Kansas City and was

scrapped there in May of 2012. The fate of her two Texas sisters, LV 505 and 506, still remains unknown. They are no longer

with Texas Utilities, but where they went, and their fate, remains a mystery. It is likely they are also scrapped, but never give up hope!

507 magically appeared in 2012, even though her appearance was brief and she didnt survive long..her sisters 505 and 506 could

still be out there somewhere.

This leaves only four surviving LV U23B's in 2012! (and two still unknown, 505 and 506)

502 - Last operated around 2006, Is now stored OOS in Camden, NJ, in 2012.

503 - Still operating, November 2011, as VULX 2779 in Annapolis Junction, MD

508 - 508 was refurbished and returned to operating condition by Larry's Truck and Electric in 2012! repainted, and sold to Shelly Materials.

LV 508 (as Shelly Materials 2784) is working at a Shelly aggregate plant in Cleveland Ohio in 2012.

509 - No new news on LV 509, she last operated around 2006, and was still stored in Millards PA, as Pennsy Supply 2785, as of January 2009.

And finally, some good news! :)

The happy story of a LV Caboose that was actually trucked to the scrap yard, was days away from being scrapped,

but at the last minute was rescued and will now be restored and live a happy retirement at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum!

and here:

For the story of how they rescued LV 95100 in October of 2011.

And! a new LV Survivor found! :)

Sometimes I like to do some google searches, to see if anything new turns up..

and I found a previously un-documented LV survivor! She has been there all along, but hadnt yet made the list.

LV SW8 Number 265 is alive and well as North Shore Number 366 in Northumberland, PA.

And, the LV Bicentennial caboose has been found! LV caboose 1776, aka LV 95085, is for sale in Maine.

Tugboat Capmoore

The Capmoore is currently out of service in Charlestown, Mass. (August 2005)

Her future is uncertain, and she could possibly be scrapped.

see this thread for more info:

http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=670

Update - Sadly the Capmoore was scrapped in 2010.

Updated the information about LV SW8 moving from Lansing, NY to Cleveland, Ohio.

June 2013

We often think "there cant be that many "undiscovered" LV survivors out there anymore."

afterall, this survivor list is now 10 years old! We might think we have found just about all of them..

but there are still lurkers out there! :)

THREE new previously unknown LV survivors were added to the list with this update!

LV 124, 126 and 256.

124 and 126 are SW900m's (originally NW2's) and 256 is a SW8 "pup"..

all three are operating, and 126 was painted in this fabulous scheme!

LV survivor list jumps from 55 to 58 units.

June 2013

Concerning the heritage of two LV SW8's..LV 268 and 273.

Originally on this LV Survivors list I had the 273 as being AG Processing #6. Turns out that was incorrect!

It is actually 268 that was AG Processing #6.

The correct heritage of the two units is:

LV 268 - CR 8682 - AG Processing #6  - ADMX 8682

LV 273 - CR 8687 - Midwest Metallics #2

Below are notes and links that prove it:

LV 268 - CR 8682 - ADMX 8682

Many photos show this unit in the same ADMX grey paintscheme, lettered as ADMX 8682, going back to (at least) 2003:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=48892&nseq=3

Photos also show that meanwhile LV 273 remains in Conrail blue to this day: LV 273 - CR 8687 - Midwest Metallics #2

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1595493

The number 8687 is visable in the headlight numberboard, and its still lettered "MM2" Midwest Metalics 2. (the number 780 is also believed to be Midwest Metallics No. 780)

So now its clear for all the various numbers..except "AG Processing #6"..Which unit was AG Processing #6? We dont know yet..

Here is a recent AG Processing No. 6

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=842370

aaaaand! here we go, google knows all!

AG Processing No. 6 is LV 268 - CR 8682 - ADMX 8682, photographic proof:

http://donsdepot.donrossgroup.net/dr2389.htm

She was Grey in 1998, not Conrail blue! Which means the info I had on the LV survivors page was incorrect..I will make the correction! Here is the correct info, proven by photos:

LV 268 - CR 8682 - AG Processing #6  - ADMX 8682

LV 273 - CR 8687 - Midwest Metallics #2
