Part 1: Splash Screen
When you first open Scheherazade, you are greeted with a splash screen:
If you are part of a user study, select your User ID from the dropdown. Otherwise, select anything you like. The User ID is integrated into the data format and otherwise doesn't matter. For this tutorial, let's choose A100.
For "Select a mode", you can select to either create a:
Story From File: This will prompt you to select a plain text file.
There are some fables that are built into Scheherazade as encoding modes. These are the ones from my associated study.
Original Story: This will start Scheherazade without a plain-text story for annotating.
Click "New Encoding" to start the editor. If you have already started and saved a story, click "Load Encoding" instead to continue work on your encoding.
For purposes of this tutorial, let's encode the story "The Fox and the Crow".
The Scheherazade editor will then start loading. It will take 1-3 minutes to load. This is due to initializing and indexing of a database of story elements.
