My book "Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots", 2nd Edition, MIT Press, is out!

Coauthored with Roland Siegwart and Illah R. Nourbakhsh

I was the main author of this second edition to which I dedicated a full year of intense writing and literature research. This second edition has been revised and updated throughout, with 130 pages of new material on such topics as locomotion, perception, localization, and planning and navigation. Problem sets have been added at the end of each chapter. Bringing together all aspects of mobile robotics into one volume, Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots can serve as a textbook or a working tool for beginning practitioners.

I moved to Philadelphia, USA, for a second postdoc. I am now at the GRASP Lab, University of Pennsylvania, with Prof. Vijay Kumar and Kostas Daniilidis

I will be working in the MAST project (Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology) on visual navigation for ground and flying robots.

Check out some of the cool stuff on micro aerial vehicles being done at the GRASP Lab of the University of Pennsylvania!

Invited Research Scientist at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Pretoria, South Africa

From November 1, 2009, I spent two months at the MIAS Lab (Mobile Intelligent Autonomous Systems) in the Department of Modeling and Digital Sciences of Council for Scientific and Industrial Reserach (CSIR), in Pretoria, South Africa.

My reserach focused on structure from motion and visual odometry for an on-road autonomous vehicles and a mine inspection.

During my research stayed I had the pleasure to work with Dr. Simukai Utete, Deon Sabatta, Jonathan Claassens, Fred Senekal, and Natasha Govender.

Most of my book "An Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots, 2nd Edition" was written during this stay. I am particularly thankful for this to Deon, Jonathan, and Simukai!

2nd place at the European Micro Aerial Vehicle competition with the first purely vision based autonomous helicopter

The European MAV competition, took place in Delft (Netherlands).

The competition consisted in having a small helicopter entering and exiting from small apartment in a fully autonomous manner.

My team, named ETH-Maverick, was the only autonomous team over the 8 participating teams. Furthermore, it was the only team using only a single camera to control the helicopter, whereas all the other teams used remote control.

The autonomy of the helicopter and the use of solely vision impressed the jury and gave us team the 2nd place. We missed the 1sr place because th

e size of the helicopter was a penalizing factor according to the rule used in the competition.
