The Workshop on Scaffolding in Open-Ended Learning Environments will be held as part of the 16th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education, which will take place from 9-13 July, 2013 at the Fedex Institute of Technology at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. The workshop aims to examine the issues and challenges related to the online diagnosis and adaptive support of learners working in complex open-ended learning environments.
Open-ended learning environments (OELEs) are learner-centered. They offer students opportunities to take part in authentic and complex problem-solving tasks by providing a learning context and a set of tools for (i) seeking and acquiring knowledge and information, (ii) applying that information to a problem-solving context, (iii) assessing the quality of the constructed solution, (iv) evaluating and reflecting on their overall approach, and (v) assessing and enacting cognitive and metacognitive processes.
By the very nature of the choices they provide for learning and problem solving, OELEs provide opportunities for students to exercise higher-order reasoning skills for managing and regulating their cognitive, metacognitive, affective, and motivational processes. This presents significant challenges to novice learners; they may have neither the proficiency for using the system's tools nor the experience and understanding necessary for explicitly regulating their learning processes. Without adaptive scaffolds, these learners typically use tools incorrectly and adopt suboptimal learning strategies. Adaptive scaffolds in OELEs refer to actions taken by the learning environment, based on the learner's interactions, intended to support the learner in completing a task.
