GSD2201 Site Representation and Research

December 2010

Objective

The main idea was re-envisioning South Boston waterfront area by re-zoning and introducing new programs and building typologies. Initially, I researched the current situation around this area and relevent precedent study of waterfront area. GIS and Google Earth could provide the visual archive of data from research. In terms of program, I keep the current use and insert new program like more institutional and human-oriented program such as a park and housing. New industiral area was moved to near harbor and the intitutional and residential buildings are replaced into this area. The main stratgy of design was to engage with the channel. Introducing the waterfront park could revitalize this current light industrial area and create new urban quality along the channel.

Presentation of Ideas in Google Earth

Google Earth(download the attached KMZ file) provides multiple platform for presenting the current zoning and proposal, and two precedent images overlaped on current South Boston image can help to simulate future appearance of this site. This overlayed precedent images in the same angle with google earth view allowes me to design easily the urban plan and building typologies. In google earch, customizing the contents as a user want allows a user to check multiple contents efficiently and simultaneously.

3D modelI built the 3d models based on the 2D-proposal and the massing models are distinguished by different colors according to the program uses. This 3d-models show the height of buildings and skyline. The sketchup model is available to download and insert in any sketchup file. Click the link: model in 3d Warehouse.

The Program in Context

In terms of access, two bridges are connected to this area so that people can access easily and use public transportation. Also, an adjacent intersection provides various access from the highway and road. The skyline was defined by the visual connection to the channel. Especially, the height of residential buildings are increasing from the waterfront park to the convention center. This strategy will be able to introduce panoramic view to even housings far from the channel. Institutional area have many own linear park which acts view corridor to Boston and physical connection to each building in the campus. With the adjacent industrial area, this institutional area will expect synergy of mutual cooperation.
