Chung Whan Park
GSD2201 Site Representation and Research
December 2010
Objective
The main purpose of this project was to redevelop south boston seaport area by re-zoning the district and providing more open space for people. I divided my site into four different districts, which has Commercial, Industrial, Residential and Mixed use area. On the border of these different districts there are green open space and water front which functions as a buffer zone in a this area.
Presentation of Ideas in Google Earth
As seen in the district plan below, the project is divided into four different districts and subdivided into detailed ones. I overlaid my sketch image into my Google Earth model in order to understand my project in a larger context, and developed urban design of the site, concentrating on the the central district, which has a huge park and a beautiful water front on each side.

As seen in the Google Earth model (you can download the KMZ file below), I overlaid two different precedent images to my project area, in order to present my ideas of how my project would look like in the future. One is the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, which shows the image of the central park district on the west side, and the other is the North Pond area in Chicago, which shows the image of the waterfront area on the east side of the town.

My Plan in 3D
I used sketchup model to see the massing of my project, in relationship with the park and waterfront, as well as the difference in height and density of residential and commercial. The main part of my sketchup model is uploaded in 3d warehouse, (My model in 3d Warehouse) and video fly-through of my project is uploaded on the youtube and linked below.
The Program in Context
This perspective image shows the program relationships within the context. Between the park and the waterfront, there are highrise residential on the north-eastern part, and lowrise residential in the middle, and right behind the waterfront, commercial district in between. On the southern part of this district, there are lake surrounded by green, which can be used as a leisure space by the neighbors nearby.

A Video Fly-Through
This video shows my project in various viewpoints, including birds eye view and street view. It gives an idea how it would feel like to walk along the street between the park and the town as well as walking along the waterfront area.

I have also uploaded the image of my project to flickr. You can see it by clicking the following link. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/57053542@N05/5264172854/)
Concluding Thoughts
I hope my project can give some inspirations to people who are designing a seaport district. They can use my sketchup model to develop their own project and experiment on the relationship between buildings and open space, and how it can fuction within the city.
