In response to an ever growing number of requests for information about Lucy the elephant, today Zoocheck Canada launched the Kids Save Lucy website.

“The Kids Save Lucy website provides easy to understand information about elephant biology and behaviour, as well as about Lucy and the misunderstandings and myths associated with her situation,” said Zoocheck Canada spokesperson Julie Woodyer.

“We want kids to engage in a process of critical thinking about Lucy. The zoo promotes Lucy to children and gives them a sugar-coated perspective on her life and health. Until now, they haven’t had an information source that lets them know there’s another side to the Lucy story,” added Voice for Animals Humane Society representative Tove Reece.

In the very near future, the website will also include a chat-room where kids can talk to other kids about elephant issues.

“Most kids empathize with animals and want to help, so I expect a lot of them will speak out on Lucy’s behalf. They have no problem understanding that an elephant alone in a small space, rocking back and forth, suffering from chronic arthritis in multiple joints, tooth problems, colic, an ongoing respiratory problem and a host of other medical conditions isn’t right,” added Zoocheck Director Rob Laidlaw, who is currently in Edmonton.
