UNIT 1 DAY 2: JUNE 20, 2017: ‘My and My Family’s Daily Routine’
- The second day of the program aimed at raising students understanding about family relationship to next level. On the first day of the program they learned varieties of expressions and key terms related with family relationship in India and USA. On the second day of the program they looked deeper into the daily routine of family members and friends. It was also the day to learn similarities and differences in family structures, such as, joint and nucleus families in India and USA.
- Supported by visuals novice students recognized family activities taking place during the day and night. Novice students demonstrated understanding about Indian cultural traditions. They quickly understood family relationship in a joint family, such as, Mousi (sisters of mother) and mama (brothers of mother), and a few characteristics.
- Our instructors began their classes with comprehensible inputs about family stories for students to understand meanings out of key words and descriptive expressions. Intermediate students watched video clips depicting daily routine of a child in India. The authentic material used by teachers served as tools to understand new information and about lives of children in India, who work as domestic help. Then they compared children’ lives in both India with their own. Intermediate students did a number of activities to understand hardships that children in India face. They worked in groups to gather and analyze information about their activities at home and at school using survey forms and worksheets.
- Our teachers implemented day’s learning plan as the day progressed. They facilitated various activities starting interpretive to interpersonal to presentational throughout the day. Teachers used varieties of props, such as, cardboard cloak with long and short arms that could be easily moved backward and forward in reflect different time frames of the day. Student learned to tell their favorite pastime during the day, their likes and dislikes at home and outside of home, such as, market place, park, etc.
- We organized computer based activities that revolved around family activities. Students learned to use Google input for Hindi texts that they used with family related photos. They created their online identity using graphics and Hindi terms. Intermediate students captioned their graphics indicating their personality and characteristics.
- On day 2 of the program students began doing presentational activities using program Tshirts, white caps and tote bags as canvas for designing topic based graphics and simple descriptions. They enjoyed the unique experience to express themselves in the art class.
- Our theater instructor, Sandhya Bhagat, divided students in to two groups. She developed skits for younger group and slowly familiarizing them with topic related dialogues. Another group of girls and boys opted for learning Bollywood dancing with meaningful songs in Hindi.
