Annual Japanese Speech Contest 2010 Contest Rules

When and Where:

March 21st, 2010, Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (The Club Room will open at 8:00 am)

From Park Blvd., take Presidents Way into Balboa Park. The Balboa Park Club Building is just beyond the big parking lot at the end of Presidents Way.

Application Form without the speech draft will be accepted only by email on and before March 5th. Please see the application form and procedure below carefully.

Eligibility & Application Requirements:

All applicants must:

  1. Be currently enrolled in a San Diego County high school, community college or university.

  2. Not be native speakers of Japanese or have a Japanese parent (Issei) and in an environment where apanese is spoken at home.

  3. Be a citizen of the USA or a permanent resident of the USA.

  4. Be a Japanese language student, currently or within the previous semester.

  5. Not have had more than six months of schooling in Japan after age six;

  6. Not have won the 1st place at a speech contest in Japanese in the past;

  7. The speech script is original and has not been read in other previous speech contests;

  8. Not read the speech and not use any supporting objects or props for your speech at the contest.

Judging Criteria:

Each speech must be about five minutes or less in length, but no shorter than three minutes. Choice of topic

is open. Judges will base their decisions on content and presentation of speech, and the interviews in

Japanese with the judges after each speech presentation. The highest total points awarded by the judges will

be the winners. The first place winner of each category will also be the winners of the Consul General's

Award. If you have any questions regarding the judging criteria, please do not hesitate to ask the committee.

Note:

The top winners of the high school category in this contest retain the right to apply for the National Contest in

May 2010 sponsored by Aurora Foundation and the Japan Foundation. The winner of this national contest

will participate in the International Competition in Tokyo in July 2010.

Prizes:

Consul General's Grand Award (1st place Plaque) for the first place winner from each category.

Winners Certificates (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places) and scholarship awards of 1st place - $300, 2nd place - $200,

and 3rd place - $100 from each category. Best Effort Award, Most Creative Award, Penmanship Award and

Humor Award from each category. All participants will receive the Certificate of Participation and the original

contest T-shirt.

Light Japanese food will be served while we wait for the contest results

Special guests:

Don Quinn, Teacher & Rock Star from Canyon Crest Academy, will sing some Japanese songs.

Japanese Koto and violin duo by Reiko Obata and Kazumi Gregory

Soran-bushi Dance Team by students from Hilltop High School, Morse High School, and Eastlake High School

Japanese teacher who currently teaches or has recently taught the applicant within the last semester. This is

to be submitted by the instructor of the applicant. Please fill out this application form below and email it by

the due date: March 5th 11:59 PM, 2010. Please read also Eligibility & Application Requirements under the

contest rules once again.

Speech Script accepted by US Postal mail due March 12th, 2010

The original handwritten copy of your speech must be mailed via US Postal (USPS) to the committee on or

before March 12th.

Please do not send the jpeg file of the script. It will not be accepted. When the application via email and the

speech script via US postal are received, the confirmation email will be issued to the teacher of the applicant

each time from NihongoContest2010@gmail.com. In case of emergency, instructions will be given to the

teacher and the student. Please notify the committee promptly when it happens.
