Students often misconstrue science as an ‘authority,’ rather than a collaborative process of knowing. As a teacher, I want my students to learn science as an interactive practice seeking truth, rather than a compendium of facts. My lectures often showcase my research and that of my close colleagues to encourage my students' appreciation of science as an active, progressive, and participatory process. As such, I have interests in the development of experiential learning-based laboratory exercises.

In collaboration with Julie Smit and Daniel Heath in the Dept. of Biological Sciences at the University of Windsor, I have developed a "CSI-type" forensics laboratory exercise for undergraduate Genetics courses using common commercially available fish species (Smit, Heath, & Walter 2014, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education).
