2.008

In 2.008, the second Design and Manufacturing course in MIT's undergraduate mechanical engineering curriculum, students were tasked to design and then manufacture in bulk yo-yos using mass manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, injection molding, and thermoforming.

Our team decided to produce yo-yos with a roulette theme, and you can see some of the units we assembled on the left. Our yo-yo was designed such that when it spins, a small white ball is able to traverse the entire circumference of the yo-yo. Design for assembly principles were employed in this product: for example, the red and black roulette board pieces were injection-molded using the same mold.
