Dr. R. Vaira Vignesh completed his undergraduate studies with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (First Class with Distinction) at Karpagam College of Engineering, an autonomous institution affiliated with Anna University, Chennai. He holds the distinction of being the first and youngest scholar to embark on the doctoral program directly following his bachelor's degree at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, where he earned a Ph.D. in the Faculty of Engineering for his significant research contributions to magnesium-based biodegradable implant materials.
Commencing his professional journey as a Junior Research Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Coimbatore Campus), Dr. Vairam played a pivotal role in projects related to the indigenization of laser surface texturing technology to reduce frictional losses in automotive components and the development of wind turbine brake pads with gradient composition and functionality, which received funding from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Subsequently, he assumed the position of an Assistant Professor at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, where he has continued to make substantial contributions to research. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Friction Stir Welding Lab and Materials Processing Lab, focusing on various aspects of advanced materials and processing. His research and development encompass areas such as solid-state processing, solid-state welding, surface engineering, and powder metallurgy processing.
Dr. Vairam has an extensive portfolio of scholarly work, including a patent, 2 books, 10+ book chapters, over 30+ conference publications (indexed in Scopus), and more than 100+ research publications in peer-reviewed international journals (SCI, SCIE, and Scopus indexed). Notably, his contributions include a significant number of publications in Q1 and Q2 journals within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His international collaborative research article stands as the first and only article from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham to be published in Materials Science and Engineering A, a prestigious journal by Elsevier, ranking in Q1 (94th percentile). His publications have also received citations from international research centers and world-renowned institutions. Dr. Vairam actively contributes to peer-reviewed international journals as a reviewer and has applied for patents for three of his inventions, with one patent already granted and the other two published in the Official Journal of the Patent Office, India.
Dr. Vairam is recognized among the top 2% of scientists in the world (Single Year category) by Stanford University, USA, and Elsevier for his dedication to materials science. Also, he has garnered numerous accolades, including the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham - Chancellor's Publication Award for his outstanding work in the field of solid-state welding and processing of lightweight materials. He has also received the prestigious Amrita Innovation and Research Awards (Publication Merit Award) for his exceptional research publications. In addition to his remarkable academic and research achievements, Dr. Vairam has received prestigious awards that further exemplify his exceptional contributions to the academic and research community. Dr. Vairam was honored with the "Outstanding Researcher Award" as part of the Innovation Awards 2023 by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. This award is a testament to his excellence in achievements that align with the vision and mission set by the University's Chancellor, Amma. Dr. Vairam was also recognized with the "Young Budding Alumni Award" as part of the Alumni Awards 2022 by the KCE Alumni Association at Karpagam College of Engineering. The award acknowledges his dedication and accomplishments as a promising young alumnus of the institution, highlighting his significant role in shaping the future of education and research. His academic excellence has been recognized with awards such as the Henry Ford Award, Best Academic Performer award from Karpagam College of Engineering, and the Best Student Award from the Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry) during his early days of education. Additionally, he secured the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Ph.D. Scholarship consecutively for two years based on his academic and research performance.
In the realm of research funding, Dr. Vairam secured a TARE Fellowship from the Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Additionally, he is engaged in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam, under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, through two research projects. Dr. Vairam is also a co-investigator in the project funded by the Aeronautics Research and Development Board (AR&DB), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Government of India. Also, he secured "Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham – Chancellor's Collaborative Research Fellowship" to support collaborative research on "Development and indigenization of sustainable Bio-Lubricants for Automotives" with King Mongkut's University of Technology, North Bangkok, Thailand.
Dr. R. Vaira Vignesh presently holds the position of Assistant Professor (Selection Grade) within the Research Track in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Coimbatore Campus). In this capacity, he consistently makes substantial contributions to academic and research endeavors.
