Un personnage populaire et des plus attachants s’en est allé, tôt ce matin. Transporté d’urgence à l’ICU de l’hôpital Victoria, Candos, à la suite d’un malaise à son domicile dimanche matin, il y est décédé aux soins intensifs sans avoir jamais repris connaissance. Il avait 61 ans. Depuis quelques années déjà, Ashok intervenait - souvent discrètement et aussi avec force - dans nos colonnes sur des sujets divers, dont évidemment sur les problèmes touchant à l’importation et à la distribution de l’essence et du diesel, tout en dénonçant le système de gestion des prix et également les conditions dérisoires imposées aux détaillants, dont il était un des principaux responsables dans l’association les regroupant. Passionné des choses de la cité, il se préoccupait de tout ce qui ne tournait pas rond et, en tant que citoyen, s’armait même de sa caméra pour fixer, ici, la dalle d’un pont complétement immergé par manque de drains ou, là encore, les chaussées inondées et le planning inadéquat de parkings dans un des endroits les mieux «planifiés» du pays, comme la zone de la Cybercité d’Ebène, ou encore des solutions à apporter pour régler des problèmes de la circulation routière. Une autre de ses passions était de faire connaître l’île Maurice à travers des films qu’il produisait et distribuait, ce qui l’avait mené à sièger sur le board de la censure pendant de nombreuses années. Golfeur invétéré, même du Gymkhana, il avait été le premier Mauricien à décrocher une licence de l’European Golf Teachers Association en Angleterre, en 2001. Ses funérailles auront lieu cet après-midi à Palma. La cérémonie religieuse se tiendra à Soobarah Lane à 16h00 avant la crémation.
