The Voluntary Pre-K initiative provides Tennessee's four-year-old children, who come from homes that meet the poverty level income guidelines, an opportunity to develop school readiness skills (pre-academic and social skills).
Voluntary Pre-K classes promote a high-quality academic environment, which fosters the love and joy of learning and promotes success in kindergarten and throughout the child's life.
Rutherford County offers 22 Voluntary Pre-K programs, with the majority of classrooms being housed in the Smyrna/Lavergne area of the county. Each classroom is staffed by a certified teacher and educational assistant and has seats for 20 students.
Frequently Asked Questions
If my child has speech needs, is he/she automatically granted a spot in VPK? No, students first qualify based on the income level of the families. If the student is accpeted and needs a speech evaluation, that will be something that the teacher, parent and speech and language patholigist work on together.
Are there any other choices if my family is over the income qualifying level? Yes. RCS offers another preschool program titled Integrated PreK. Please use this link for specifics around IPK: Integrated PreSchool
Who qualifies for VPK? Students who are 4 years old by August 15 AND meets the family income qualifier.
Do you have any three-year-old VPK classrooms? No. While the TDOE does allow for three-year-olds in VPK, they are to only be accepted after ALL income qualifying 4-year-olds have a seat. Because Rutherford County always has a waiting list of income qualifying 4-year-old studnets, as a general rule, we do not take 3's.
