Mapping Forest Tree Stems by PointCNN Point Cloud Classification
Brief description of the story map: This map demonstrates mapping trees from mobile lidar data by PointCNN for a secondary forest in the Lishan Area, Taiwan. The analytical procedures from airborne and mobile lidar data collection to modeling and validation were presented. The results appeared that PointCNN is promising as a ground-truthing tool to provide reliable tree maps from mobile lidar data and, therefore, is likely to benefit forest inventory and MRV.
Map location: The forest in the area of the Dajiaxi Working Circle, managed by the Taiwan Forestry Bureau, was selected for this study. The forest is at 121º07’42”–121º27’03” E and 24º08’09”–24º26’31” N in north-central Taiwan.
Map book descriptions: PointCNN extracts a map of trees in a subtropical secondary forest in Taiwan. Broadleaf trees are the dominant species naturally regenerated from degraded pine forests. The recall, precision, and f1-score are 0.92, 0.97, and 0.94, respectively.
