A quick exit off the train (the others were staying on to Hanoi in our carriages, so no need to uncouple) and a short bus ride to the place where we all boarded small boats to ride through the Tam Coc caves on the Ngo Dong River. Not only are the caves a wonder, the surrounding scenery is also amazing, with limestone (Karst) crags rising straight out of the landscape. The following photos fail to do it justice.

The hotel in Hanoi was in the Old Quarter and handy to Hoan Kiem Lake; one of quite a few scattered about Hanoi. A free afternoon was very welcome.
