The program cover for a football game played in Stamford on September 21, 1945, between the Roscoe Plowboys and Stamford Bulldogs. The Plowboys won that game 20-6 and went undefeated during the regular season that year only to lose to Monahans 13-6 in the bi-district playoff when half the team was out with the flu. Roscoe’s coach was the legendary Gordon Wood, who said in a 1970’s interview that the 1945 Plowboys were the best football team he ever coached—and that included several state championship teams at Stamford and Brownwood.
