An academic's professional life involves research, teaching, and "service". I'm not going to bore you with details of all the committees I sat on, so it will be just teaching and research here.
My research relates mostly to the ‘long middle ages’, from the fourth century A.D. to the mid-eighteenth century. My main interests are demography and industrialization, pursued from a variety of sources of evidence. I think of myself as lurking on the disciplinary borders of Anthropology, Archaeology, and History. My undergraduate degree was in Anthropology (McMaster). I then did a Ph.D. in Archaeology (Sheffield), and worked extensively in cultural resource management.
I’ve spent a lot of time in front of a university classroom. I taught 24 different courses in archaeology, anthropology, history, and medieval studies, at the University of Sheffield, the University of Wales, Trent University, Waterloo University, and Wilfrid Laurier University. In 2012, I was the recipient of the Wilfrid Laurier University 2012 Award for Teaching Excellence for Contract Academic Staff.
