It is my personal belief that there is no point to playing anything without an emotional attachment to it. One of the easiest ways to create this attachment is by creating a story to follow the music. In this lesson, we are using a Series of Events Graph to compose our story. This strategy is one that is used in many of the other content areas. In history, it can be used to explain how one issue led to another and how the situation evolved and reached its conclusion. In a reading class, this strategy can be used to create a timeline of events so that the story can be better understood. This is especially helpful when reading a book like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban which has time travel. This literacy tool is perfect for mapping out how changing the past can affect the future.
However, in this lesson, we are using it like the storyboard for a comic book. Students can listen to the music and create their own stories using words or images that they write down as the music progresses. Below is a copy of my lesson plan, using a format one of my professors used, from when I did this in college along with a video of the experience.
