My name is Robert Valdez II, and I currently serve as the Head Band Director at Taft ISD, where I lead a districtwide music program across both middle and high school campuses. I have worked to build a comprehensive marching band curriculum, mentor staff, and provide daily instruction that challenges and encourages growth students. I’m proud to have continued the program's consistent Area-level marching advancement and meaningful community engagement through performances and events.
Before stepping into this role, I served as the Junior High Band Director and High School Assistant at Taft ISD from 2022 to 2024. During that time, I conducted the Junior High Wind Ensemble, led beginner and intermediate student instruction, and helped the program earn recognition as a 2023 TMEA State Junior High Honor Band Finalist. I also contributed to the high school band’s advancement as a TMEA State Finalist that same year.
I began my teaching career at Crystal City ISD, where I directed junior high and assisted at the high school from 2020 to 2022. There, I introduced hybrid music learning models, began reintroducing the jazz program, and developed music history curricula. I was also the marching band director and helped lead the group to the Area E Marching Band Contest as a 4A ensemble.
Throughout my career, I have mentored multiple All-State musicians and state-qualifying soloists and ensembles, including students in percussion, brass, and woodwinds. I’ve also conducted an indoor concert percussion ensemble that earned top placements in the Texas Educational Colorguard Association Circuit.
In August 2024, I was honored as a “Terrific Teacher” by The News of San Patricio, sponsored by Gulf Coast Growth Ventures. I remain committed to growing a music program that develops well-rounded musicians and confident leaders.
