About

I am an Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Electrical Engineering (DIE) of the University of Chile's Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM), and a Research Associate at the Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Imperial College London. I am also the Lead Investigator of the Energy Group in the Complex Engineering Systems Institute (ISCI), housed at the University of Chile, and the Coordinator of the Dual PhD Program in Electrical Engineering between the University of Chile and The University of Manchester.

I formerly completed my BSc.Eng and MSc.Eng (summa cum laude) working with Prof. Hugh Rudnick at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, and my PhD and post-doctoral research working with Prof. Goran Strbac at Imperial College London.

My research focuses on the development of new concepts and models in energy grids to make electricity supply more sustainable, resilient, reliable and affordable through the application of advanced mathematical models (stochastic, robust and distributionally robust optimisation, and simulation models). Remarkably, my work on network reliability and resilience has been the recipient of an international Newton Prize, awarded by the British Government in 2018 in recognition for excellent research and innovation.

I have participated in a number of research projects for institutions like Conicyt/Anid (a Chilean research council), EPSRC (a British research council), EPRI, Fraunhofer, European Commission, UK and Chilean Governments, World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. I have also participated in numerous industry projects for regulatory bodies, system operators, and electricity and gas companies in EU, the Americas, and Asia. As a result of this varied practical experience, my research reflects and tackles real-world problems through workable models.

My research outputs include more than 90 papers published in peer-reviewed journals and conferences proceedings. I am also an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Energy Markets, Policy and Regulation, the IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy, and a regular reviewer of other 8 internationally recognised journals of IEEE, IET and Elsevier, and an organiser of a number of technical activities in IEEE, CIGRE and Informs. I have also been a member of the Steering Committee of the youth branch of CIGRE in the UK (CIGRE NGN) and the Chair of the Latin American Infrastructure Working Group of the Power and Energy Society of IEEE (IEEE-PES). Currently, I am the Chair of the Task Force on Cross-Border Electricity Integration in Latin America and the Vice-Chair of the Working Group on Natural Disaster Mitigation Methods and Operation Technology, both part of IEEE-PES.
