PhD Scholarship ($47,000+ per year 2025-2028)
Advised Feb. 2025
Project Details: This project is jointly supported by CSIRO, RMIT University, and IMRA with the aim to revolutionize surgical training, ensuring consistent proficiency levels and improving patient outcomes. The significance lies in its potential to streamline training processes, reduce costs, and increase transparency in surgical proficiency assessments. The project deliverables include a robust AI system capable of analysing surgical videos, providing real-time feedback, and explaining evaluation criteria. This system will enhance surgical training by offering objective proficiency assessments, thereby improving the quality and safety of robotic surgeries. The project bridges the gap between academia and industry, leveraging cutting-edge technology to address critical challenges in robotic surgery training and patient care.
The project offers a unique opportunity for the PhD student to gain industry-relevant research experience while developing commercialization and innovation skills. The International Medical Robotics Association (IMRA) is a centre of excellence that embraces new technology, adapts to the changing education needs of modern surgeons, and delivers robotic surgical training. The engagement with IMRA include internship.
Scholarship Details: CSIRO’s Industry PhD (iPhD) Program brings together an industry partner, a university and CSIRO to co-develop a four-year industry-focused PhD project. The program supports a three-way partnership aiming to train new researchers in critical areas and facilitate long-term beneficial interaction between universities, CSIRO, and industry ($47,000+ per year for four years). CSIRO’s Industry PhD program is being delivered as part of the Australian Government’s support to grow university research commercialization.
Candidate: The successful candidate is expected to have strong motivation and evidenced skills in machine learning and computer vision. Collaboration and communication skills are also necessary for engaging with stakeholders and researchers. It is desirable that candidate have research background. To be eligible, PhD students must:
· Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or Australian Permanent Resident,
