5/15/2013 -- ROP Buffered Bike Lanes

Post date: Aug 3, 2013 11:14:57 PM

On May 2nd, the city DOT held a community meeting to discuss the option of installing buffered bike lanes on ROP from Guadalupe River to the Coyote Creek Trail. The city plans to add delineators (i.e. soft hit posts) for part of the street and mountable curbs (i.e. those rubber curbs used on 3rd & 4th Streets in downtown San Jose) for the rest. The work is apparently already planned, funded, and but construction is delayed from the original 2013 estimate. We will post an update when we hear the new plan.

Summary of the proposed changes from Mike Bertram:

  • From 1st to Zanker, they are putting in a 6’ bike lane and a 3’ buffer area with pylons in the buffer area
  • From Zanker to Montague, they are putting in a 6’ bike lane with a rounded short curb separating the lane from car traffic
  • Transition areas where cars cross the bike lane will be marked with a white dashed line and green stripes

RONA supports this enhancement as it will narrow ROP and provide a traffic-calming effect.
