My first attempt at making a Z-axis was fine for a pen on a plotter but was not up to the job when I added a 1.5Kg router to it. I started by designing a new one using FreeCAD and had to make a front and back plate, a couple of brackets and a new brass nut for the M8 lead screw. It all worked very well and is now rock solid.
