Performance/Pedagogy/Improvisation (breakout session)

Knowledge

Voyager produces music based on knowledge

choices out of a variety of correct responses

surprise is necessary but in context of shared knowledge base + embedded knowledge (reinjection)

2 types of systems

Autonomous - can create music by itself (ie Voyager), quasi-predictability

Collaborative - Improtek

Musician + system create a context together

constraints constantly change

Software with video (ask Gerard?) - video with audio is spliced and recombined to create novel combinations

often creates patterns that are physically impossible for humans (outside human scale)

in domains of speed and mechanics

but this is sonically interesting for musicians

systems allow reactions to new situations

Improvisors:

"openness" of performer is an important personality trait to consider

expert needs to engage with system

they test the space, accept the culture of computer as independently controlled

perhaps apprehensive musicians can be taught how to interact with the system

"uncanny valley"

Control:

responses to sound - reflect information and definitions

what happens when this breaks down?

Systems lack theory of mind

can we build it in?

should we?
