4/22/2020: Some notes from Camus' The Plague apropos of public health law. Probably folks read this for years looking at the plot as being a metaphor for dealing with a looming background of existential dread. But no! It's actually about what happens during a plague.

Why don’t I say, “Black Lives Matter”? After all, I should think my life, my kid’s life, and the lives of half my family matter. They do.
If you want a good analogy for understanding BLM and Antifa, think Goldstein's Book from 1984. Here’s a free full-text done up in LaTex. https://www.planetebook.com/free-ebooks/1984.pdf
Some reviled it.
“The Hate had started. As usual, the face of Emmanuel Goldstein, the Enemy of the People, had flashed on to the screen. There were hisses here and there among the audience. The little sandy-haired woman gave a squeak of mingled fear and disgust.”
Others thought it was a passage to salvation.
“If there was hope, it lay in the proles! Without having read to the end of THE BOOK, he knew that that must be Goldstein’s final message. The future belonged to the proles. And could he be sure that when their time came the world they constructed would not be just as alien to him, Winston Smith, as the world of the Party? Yes, because at the least it would be a world of sanity.”
But it was a distraction, and the intent behind it was to keep the people of Oceania dumb either by tying them into false hope or entertaining them w/ false anger. And now we have those who think they are a part of an elite leftist vanguard and those who think there are two new dangerous terrorist organizations. Both of these organizations--to the extent you can say they're organized--have their roots and nourishment in no small part in internet troll farms spamming out phony ideology. It isn’t as though there aren’t real actors out there, saying and doing real things, positive and destructive, under the inspiration of doctrine. It is that the genesis of the doctrine is not real. If we looked at it in terms of Four Causes, Formal, Material, Efficient, and Final—they’re all rather inauthentic.
“You have read THE BOOK, Goldstein’s book, or parts of it, at least. Did it tell you anything that you did not know already?
You have read it?” said Winston.
“I wrote it. That is to say, I collaborated in writing it. No book is produced individually, as you know.”
