Maracas are rattle shakers common in Caribbean, Latin American, and South American music. They are traditional made of dried calabash gourds filled with beads or beans. In the Marimba Band we use the traditional Mexican designed maracas made of wood and painted red and green, a reference to the Mexican flag.

Bring/Wear: white fitted t-shirt, black fitted leggings (not flared), white, tan or black high heel shoes, hair curled, and makeup (brown & gold eye shadow, black eyeliner, red lipstick, blush, (optional) false eyelashes). Make-up kit will be provided if you don't have your own.
Time: prep time for make-up, hair and warm-ups will be from 4-5pm. The audition will begin at 5pm and usually takes 45-60 minutes. Results will be announced as early as the following day.
The audition: all students including those currently in the performing group will audition. The top 5-7 students will earn their spot in next year's performing group. You will be assessed by a panel of former members from the community on three rhythm styles: polca (medium and fast), bolero, and cumbia. Judges will score on a 5-point scale each dancer's (A) grace & posture, (B) Smile & Eye-Contact, (C) Energy & Enthusiasm, (D) polca rhythm & timing, (E) bolero rhythm & timing, (F) cumbia rhythm & timing, (G) clarity of sound in each hand. You may earn special consideration if you have other musical talents such as singing or instrumental.
Songs: We usually use the following songs to practice the different rhythms.
“La Ley del Monte,” Vicente Fernández, medium-paced polka
“El Herradero,” Ángeles Ochoa, fast-paced polka
“Adiós Amor,” Christián Nodal or "Amor Eterno," Rocío Durcal, bolero
“Como la Flor,” Selena, cumbia
Workshops: Attend after school maraca workshops to learn and refine the playing techniques, footwork/choreography, and stage presence. The workshop and audition schedule will be posted. Any further questions? Contact the director, Mr. Ricardo Gabaldón at rgabaldon@righetti.us.
