Debate Club holds meetings once a week to learn about the world and practice debating skills. Meetings will include a variety of activities, such as games, lessons, and debates. We mostly debate in British Parliamentary style, which involves 4 teams (8 people). Make sure to invite your friends and get a partner. For holidays and special occasions, we have special themed motions!
"You are the strong safety for the Cleveland Browns, the worst team in the history of football. You have played for them for your entire 15 year career and have decided at the beginning of the year that independent of results you would retire at the end of the year. You were born and raised in Cleveland and are the pride of the city. There are 3 religious institutions named after you, a Church, Synagogue, and a Mosque. 4 schools named after you. The local Bishop has tried getting you canonized on multiple occasions. You are the reason LeBron came back. YOU ARE CLEVELAND. That cannot be understated in this debate. Somehow you've carried the team to the Superbowl, the most important game of the year, and it's the last play of the game and you're up by 5 (a touchdown is worth 6) the opposing team has the ball and substitutes on a 6 year old boy with Leukemia at running back who's make a wish dream is to score a touchdown in the NFL. The play begins and the kid has the ball, everyone has let him through. You're the last line of defence. This House Would deck the kid."
Debate club meets Tuesdays at 3:35 PM in the English Pod. See you there!
Throughout the year, we will attend tournaments throughout the year to assert our dominance as a school (Go RHHS!) There are novice tournaments specifically designed to be accessible and a great learning experience for new debaters, but we will also be attending more competitive university-hosted tournaments, as well as Ontario Debating Provincials and potentially nationals. If you are interested, just message anyone in any way and we'll take care of registration and logistics and check out our Events page for a spreadsheet of more popular tournaments!
You already know it! Sweaters were available for order, and stickers could be earned at the in-house debate tournnament + other cool swag with money or Debate Coin!
