1Dearest Papli, {frog holding a sundae sticker}
Our conversation before you left for Dublin, regarding paper topics has inspired much of this dialogue. I
hope to point out some moments (June 16, 1904) that may interest you. Should you want to embark on
this journey yourself, and read the blasted, lambasted, bombast-ed work in its entirety, this journal may
ease the travel. At best, it is pedagogy, at worst, a throwaway. [found objects & otherwise; hallmark

Telemachiad------------------→The Wanderings------------------→ Homecoming (NOSTOS)
[OUR STORY...] [Said Thucydides of ancient Piraeus, “from all the lands, everything enters”]
The first three chapters take on an Homeric parallel. The first chapter, as named by Gifford and others.
But no so dubbed in many of my editions is “Telemachus”. [Not intended for use by children 12 and

When we looked at this chapter in class, I longed to put my notes in a KUD (Know, Understand,
Do) lesson plan that this year has made me do so oft. How would one approach, or harness, these
‘liberated words’, especially at inception? I considered dividing it into “essential questions” and
“essential understandings”, also I thought the factors that truly not to be missed in the text itself: a world
view, or a turn [Please Recycle This] of phrase. There are many instances when I take this text too
seriously, and many others when I prefer to follow the course description’s urgings and just “Re-Joyce”.
[Sticker of boy and girl puppies lapping at a sundae]. Let us dig in. Joyce is a fantastic dessert, and so
much of the time in this novel folds in on itself like a gooey caramel or nougat. Should I have missed
something [“extraordinary”***** Irish Mail] in this initial chapter, I know it will recur, and reoccur. The
Pentecost, and speaking in tongues that has been reading this text, as prelude to this summer, as
independent study in 2012, as summer idleness in 2003, and as St. John’s ‘preceptorial’ in 2000 gives the
work an intelligibility. There are so many voices weaving together, albeit, not a cacophony, but also not
in accord. There has been a kind of composer impotence I’ve experienced when trying to find a starting
point. [PROCESS IMMEDIATELY time-dated; nostalgic; TRASH; puppy sticker, cocked ear Say
