Raising a Reader Lake County is a proud affiliate of the Raising a Reader National organization.
Raising a Reader is a research-based program with yearly data collected attesting to its effectiveness.
Thanks to a collaborative grant proposal with the Fremont Public Library (see OUR DONOR WALL here), the Lake County program began in September 2014 with 30 children enrolled in bilingual pre-kindergarten classes offered at Carl Sandburg Middle School in Mundelein, IL. By December, the program had reached site capacity with 80 bilingual children and their families enrolled, and stories of children cherishing their books -- and of time spent one-on-one with beloved adults-- began pouring in. We now move on with 10 classrooms and over 240 children loving their red book bags!
When children begin this program they cannot read, yet they absorb how the power of books elevates storytelling and unites them with their parents. Brain development, family time, and literacy preparation -- what a great combination for our children!
