JESUS THE SON AND SECOND PERSON OF THE TRINITY
In this treatise I will be focusing on the Son second person in the Trinity who became Jesus before creation. When we look at the preexistence of the SON we are interested in his activity, relationship to the Godhead and work/mission.
When we use the term “Person” in respect to the Godhead it has a specific meaning and must be defined. “Person" in philosophy and religion refers to one who is self aware, capable of thought and able to make moral decisions. That is why Christians refer to the 3 persons of the Godhead, yet One God. There is both a separateness (God the Son died on the cross, but not God the Father, existing at the same time - see John 1:1b, the Word, Jesus, was with God) as well as a Oneness (and the Word, Jesus, was God-John 1:1c). See also Deut 6:4.
John 17:4 Jesus in his prayer gives us a glimpse of his pre-existence as the SON, as the second person in the trinity, before creation. Looking at the verse objectively we see the SON who was in a glorified state prior to his departure from heaven to begin his mission of earth as the Messiah. That Glory that Jesus is alluding to is described in Exodus 33:19; 34:6,7 as God being full of grace, mercy, truth, justice, judgment, forgiveness, longsuffering and abound in goodness.
John 17:4-5 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. (KJV)
Hebrews 11:8 In this scripture we see God is eternal and is outside of time, God Created Time, therefore he preexisted time and is not subject to it. In other words the Creator is not subject to its creation. Notice that the scripture says the worlds were framed by the word. The same word which is spoken of in John 1:1-3.
Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (KJV)
The Logos is God. This scripture shows the Word or SON was preexistence by describing him as in the beginning; then it shows the SON is somewhat distinct and at the same time unified; by using the term, was with and was. At the same time this scripture shows that the SON as part of the Godhead one of his missions is creator.
John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (KJV)
Isaiah 40:3 Isaiah uses an interesting array of wording, a clear reference to John the Baptist (John 1:23) and Jesus the Christ but interestingly Isaiah uses the word Jehovah in describing Jesus; once again deity is ascribed. Clear the way for Jehovah (John the Baptist + Jesus)
Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. (KJV)
John 1:23 Here John claims to be the fulfillment of the prophecy of Esaias return not a reincarnation but in personality, boldness, strength and actions.
John 1:23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. (KJV)
John 1:30 Pre-existence of Jesus as the Son in the Trinity before his incarnation as Jesus Son of Mary; we see in this verse he preexisted John the Baptist even so he is six months older than Jesus, But John’s meaning of he was before me takes on a precreation tone.
John 1:30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. (KJV)
Micah 5:2 in a messianic prophecy Bethlehem is told out of them the preexistent Christ would come. He is ascribed as GOD (from everlasting)
Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. (KJV)
Isaiah 9:6-7 Here in a reference to the coming Messiah (Jesus the Christ) is called Eternal Fathers (father of eternity), Mighty God and Jehovah.
Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (KJV)
John 8:58 Jesus said he was the I AM, meaning the self existing one. The Bible teaches that the Son is God and at the sometime is separate person within the Godhead. As we discussed above we are not using person in human terms. In the scripture below God tells Moses who he was I AM that I AM. In John 8:58 Jesus says he is the, I AM. An interesting side note in the Hebrew God calls him self I AM and Moses tell Pharaoh that HE IS sent him
Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. (KJV)
JOHN 8:56-58 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. 57Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. (KJV)
John 3:13 Claim to Pre-existence and that he was the Son of Man which was his prior position in heaven before coming to earth.
John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. (KJV)
John 3:17, 31 These verses show Jesus was sent by God out of heaven from a high status to a lowly status as a man and his mission was of salvation
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (KJV)
John 3:31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. (KJV)
John 6:33, 38, 40, 51, 62, 8:23 From Heaven where he was before showing his preexistence state as part of the Godhead.
John 6:33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. (KJV)
John 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. (KJV)
John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. (KJV)
John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. (KJV)
John 6:62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? (KJV)
John 8:23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. (KJV)
John 16:27-28 Came from God and Going Back to the Father once again we see the separate person of the Father and Son yet with unity.
John 16:27-28 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. 28I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. (KJV)
Col 1:13-17, 3:1 He is the image of God and yet creates all things. When it says he creates all things he had to preexist his creations. In this verse we see the separate persons of the Godhead yet united as one.
Colossians 1:13-17 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (KJV)
In conclusion we discussed the preexistence of the SON second person of the GODHEAD before creation. We looked at the SON as creator. We also looked at the name Jehovah being described to the future Jesus Christ in OT prophecies.
