Responsible Citizenship

What is Community Service?

Community service is one way to demonstrate that you are a responsible citizen. Many people are not sure what is or is not community service. For example, if you mow a neighbor's lawn, you are being nice, but you are not doing community service. Community service generally means giving back to your community by volunteering at a nonprofit organization or participating in a fundraiser or other activity that will benefit the city, county, or state in some way.

Each R. A. Long High School graduate will have completed 24 hours of community service (or six hours per year for every year they at R. A. Long) by the time they graduate.

Finding community service opportunities in an area you are considering for a career is a great idea because it allows you to find out whether you really like that career and it looks good for colleges.
