Pictures

Here are some pictures of the system built at LBNL. As was mentioned before, the design has evolved since this version of the system was built, so there will be discrepancies between the design/instructions presented in these pages and the images shown below. In case of doubt on the discrepancies, the design/instruction information should be considered as the final word.

Insert for Microscope Stage

This is a standard insert for the stage, which has been modified to hold the chip firmly in place. The picture on the right shows the transparent cover that mates with the insert and is used to create a controlled atmosphere around the chip by injecting into it a stream of gas prepared by the CO2/O2/N2 mixer. An custom-made aluminum plate with an observation opening was secured to the bottom of the insert with screws, and two grooves were machined on either side of the holding area to receive mating prongs machined onto the transparent cover (this secures the cover in place and keeps it from moving when the stage moves).

These images show a chip secured onto the insert and connected to all the control lines (without the use of connectors). Slots were machined on the sides of the transparent cover to allow the control tubes to pass. Self-adhesive cable clamps are attached to the stage to secure all the tubes connected to the chip and prevent them from moving the chip when the stage moves.
