Terran Brightsword was born Terran Markusson, and lived in the capital city of the Old Kingdom. He has an older sister named Arissa (four years older), his mother, Valerie, was a washerwoman, and his father, Markus, was a miner. Markus died in a mine collapse when Terran was only two years old, and his mother died from an illness when Terran was seven. After that, his sister cared for him by working as a scullery maid in a minor noble's house.

After resisting the amorous advances of the nobleman's son, Arissa was fired and later accused of theft, leaving her and Terran to live a life on the streets. Life had made Terran and his sister bitter and cynical, though they never turned to a true life of crime.

During the early days of the War of Chaos, there was a battle in the capital city. During the battle, a twelve year old Terran and his sister got caught in the middle, and a damaged building was about to fall on Terran when Jarak Pendragon I charged in to save Terran's life, taking the full brunt of the collapse. Jarak died as a result of the injuries sustained.

Terran, inspired by the actions of a man who didn't even know him giving his life for him, dedicated himself to a life of service, determined to make Jarak's sacrifice mean something. Terran was chosen by The First to become one of the ten kings of men. For his valor during the war, he was given the name Brightsword.
